As the Doctor’s companions were still in the Control Room, sharing their joy with each other, the Doctor’s human twin asked to talk to him in private. The Time Lord led the way to the kitchen, away from the others, and waited for him to talk.
“What did you need to talk to me about?” asked the Doctor, leaning against the counter with his arms crossed.
“I know what you plan to do…about me.” The human Doctor replied.
“You’re going,” the Doctor commanded.
“Yes, I am…but not with Rose.”
“What do you mean?” asked the Doctor.
“Because Martha knew I was part you and part Donna, and she cared enough about me and my health to ask how I was. She checked me over to make sure nothing was wrong with me and sensed how I was feeling and asked why I looked so down. I explained to her what you planned on doing with me and she reminded me that I’m my own person now.”
“What?” asked the confused Doctor. “You’re going with her because of that?”
“I was trying to prove a point,” the human Doctor replied. “I’m going with her because it’s Martha. She won’t treat me as a substitute for you - she’s not like that. I want to go with her.”

*Eight minutes ago in the TARDIS*
“You don’t look very good,” Martha said, bringing the Doctor’s human counterpart to sit down in the Captain’s seat. “What’s wrong?”
“The Doctor plans on leaving me in the other dimension with Rose,” he replied sadly and quietly so the blonde wouldn’t hear.
“You don’t want to go?” asked Martha with concern. Taking the Doctor’s first aid kit near by, she took out a stethoscope, checking his heart to make sure he was healthy. She didn’t know the health risks of the Meta Crisis, if there were any, but as a doctor, she needed to be sure.
“No,” he replied. “I don’t want to stay here either - he thinks I’m a monster for what I did.”
“You’re not a monster,” Martha said quickly. “What do you want to do, then?”
“I don’t know; I don’t have anywhere else to go, but I refuse to be a toy in order to shut up a child.” Martha raised her eyebrow at the man they'd all started calling Handy.
At that moment, Martha looked up to see Jack’s concerned face.
“If you want, you can come back to Earth with us, I can put in a word for you with UNIT, like the Doctor did with me. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind bringing you on.” Martha smiled at the double. “And if you decide you don’t like UNIT, I’m sure Jack will be happy to bring you into Torchwood.”
“You’d both do that for me?” asked Handy. He sounded like a small, scared child, unloved by his parents, or in his case, by the Doctor.
“You’re always welcome.” Jack said. “Besides, Mickey isn’t going back to that other dimension, either.”
“Really?” asked Martha.
“Yeah,” Jack nodded. “He’s coming to Torchwood to work for me, I think.” He turned to the dark man, who was busy talking with Sarah Jane and Donna. “And to think I just got rid of him.”
Martha and Handy laughed, then looked at each other.
“You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.” Martha said seriously, taking Handy’s hand.
“Where would I live?” he asked.
“Well, Tom’s-” she didn’t want to mention before all of this happened, he'd called to tell her he wasn’t ‘up for marriage’. “He’s in Africa still, so you can stay with me for the time being.”
“Oh, Martha,” Handy embraced his Dark Lady, and with a smile, she returned the hug.

*Now*
“So what do you plan on doing?” asked the Doctor.
“Martha said I could work with her at UNIT, and if that doesn’t work out, Jack invited me to work him and Mickey.”
“Mickey?” the Doctor frowned.
“Mickey told Jack he wasn’t going back to the other dimension either and had nothing else to keep him there, just like I have nothing to take me there.” Handy tried to explain as best he could, but knew the Doctor was growing irritated. “I know something you’ve never admitted to yourself, which is why you’re trying to give me away to someone who wouldn’t love me because of who I’m not.”
“What?”
“You got over her, didn’t you?” asked Handy. “You got over her during your time with Martha and Donna; you did it slowly, but you’re over her now. You realized you could survive without her and you’re trying to make it up to her.”
“How would you know what I’m feeling?” the Time Lord asked, knowing this was true.
“I’m part of you - I know your thoughts, feelings…everything.” Handy sighed and looked at his twin. “I’m not going with her to be miserable and make her happy - it’s not my job. I can feel sorry for her; I feel sorry for the fact that she has to live in the past while everyone else is moving forward. And I feel sorry for you, for feeling responsible and thinking it’s your job to make her happy.”
The Doctor nodded his head, understanding his human twin’s decisions. At least if he went with Martha, she could look after him - keep him out of trouble and make him better.
“I know your intentions are good, but sometimes doing things for the ‘right reason’ isn’t always right.”
“You’ve made your point,” the Doctor said shortly. “I’ll leave you with Martha, Jack, and Mickey, but promise me you’ll all look after each other. Jack and Martha look after each other, but-” Handy smiled and nodded his head.
“I promise we’ll be so close you can’t pry us apart,” Handy grinned and placed a hand over his heart. “Shall we go, then?”
The Doctor nodded his head and led the way out back to the Control Room. He was disappointed Handy wasn’t going to the other dimension, but at the same time, he couldn’t control the other man.
As Sarah Jane gave the Doctor one last hug after telling him he had the biggest family on Earth, Martha, Jack, Mickey, and Handy came out, all ready to go their own way as a group.
Jack and Martha gave the Doctor a salute, followed by Mickey, and the ‘Time Lord’ salute from Handy. The Doctor watched as the four walked away; Handy was on the very left, holding Martha’s hand, while Martha and Jack were in the middle, holding on to each other’s hand, and Mickey was on the very right.
The Time Lord, although feeling a bit envious of his human counterpart, was happy they had each other. Perhaps this was the way it was supposed to be. He thought about what Martha told him, just before they all walked off together, and smiled to himself.

“Sometimes you act like you cause bad things to happen, but you made our lives better, and you brought us all together. I wouldn’t know what it felt like to be so close to so many beautiful and wonderful people like this…and it’s all because of you.” Martha reached up to kiss his cheek and hugged him.
“Try not to be so lonely all the time; you’ll see us all again, and you’ll be reminded that you do have a family and a place here.”
