Iron Man 2: Review

Apr 29, 2010 23:17

First off, let me point out that I was disappointed to hear that Pepper kissing the Iron Man helmet was cut. Its a shame but Jon Favreau asures us that ALL the deleted scenes so thats something to look forward to.

If you're looking for action, explosions, Happy driving the Monicarlo racetrack against traffic, Scarlett Johansen, loads of spontanious Robert Downey Jr humor and tiny sprinkle of romance, then look no further than Iron Man 2.

Robert Downey Jr reprises his role as Tony Stark with Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts. Due to a money dispute, Terrance Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle along with new comers Scarlett Johansen as the Black Widow, Mickey Rourkea as Whiplash and Sam Rockwell as Justn Hammer. An all star cast that compliments each other in that they share the screen time.

Where to start is the main problem. The main thing that caught my attention is that, unlike the first movie, you get to see how one situation is affecting more than one character. For example, Rhodey and the Mark II suit. Without trying to give much away, you see Tony struggling with the betrayal of a friend, Rhodey realizing just how badky he screwed up, Justin Hammer using the incident to bring out Tony's downfall, along with Pepper trying to deal with government, military and not kill Tony all at the same time.

While the Black Widow doesn't get as much screen time as one would expect, both Happy and Pepper are allowed to stretch their wings, so to speak. Pepper is dealing with Tony's new attitude and the aftermath of the 'I am Iron Man conference' while we see Happy in a more protective role toward Pepper. Seeing Jon Favreau getting his ass kicked by Scarlett Johansen is always good fun though.

While some were dishearted by Marvel dropping Terrance Howard, my honest opinion is that, dispute or not, it was a wise decision. Though I have great respect for Howard as an actor, I believe that Don Cheadle made a more believable. You may argue but I could simply not see Terrance Howard as War Machine. Sorry.

There's a lot more banter between Pepper and Tony than the first one though there is also a lot of tension. The pauir are constantly bickering and talking over ecag other. And though originally called a 'love triangle' Natalia and Tony simply do not have the chemistry, as pointed out by the actors themselves.

Robert Downey Jr shines through once again with witty humor and comedic timing. This time around though, you also get to see his emotional side, with his superhero counterpart dealing with revealing his identity and the emotional trauma of losing his closest friends. Watch out for a drunk, dancing Iron Man. its priceless.

Gwyneth Paltrow has plenty of screen time, but what troubled me, in both the first and second, is that some of her gasps and suprised facial expressions aren't believable enough. She is an incredible actress, dont get me wrong, and her performance as Pepper Potts is great, but she doesnt sell suprise as well as she could.

Though any fans are not used to seeing Scarlett Johansen in such a physical role, but ladies better lock up their husbands because in her SHIELD outfit, she is one hot babe. She is also a girl that can kick some serious ass. Fans of the comic book may be disppointed at the lack of an accent, but in all fairness, the Black Widow being Russian as well as Whiplash would have been confusing, so they made a wise decision on that part.

Possibly the best newcomer to the Iron Man franchise has GOT to be Mickey Rourke. He held a floorless accent and he gave the character of Whiplash a more human element than portrayed on the comic book. The guy is literally a machine.

Unforetunately, I cant do commentary of Sam Rockwell's younger version of Justion Hammer as I am unfamiliar with the character. Sorry to disppoint.

The CGI is flawless, the effects are mindblowing, and though sparse, the metal is cranked high. The action is extremely well choriographed and the humor has people of all ages sharing a laugh. The Iron Man franchise is going to such lengths that a young boy even showed up in an Iron Man helmet.

I absolutely loved this movie and would recommend it to anyone, whether they are a fan of the comic or hoping for an enjoyable time. For the keen comic fans, be on the look out for a major heroic icon and wait until after the credits, there's alos a little surprise at the end.

I say no more.
