Notes from the Author
When the idea of the TARDIS_bigbang was proposed I jumped at the chance to sign up for it without any real idea of what a bigbang was. So what if I'd only written one story that was longer than 4000 words? How hard could it be?
*headdesk*
Very hard. Very, very hard.
There was this pesky little thing my bigbang was missing, namely a plot. From the get go I knew the story would be revolving around Jack, since he was my fandom at that point, and nearly everything I'd ever written revolved around him. I wanted to show how multilayered Jack was and I started thinking about an OC I'd introduced in my long adventure-type Torchwood story, "Unexpected Tourists." 'The magnificent Miss Maggie' an older woman who showed up at Torchwood asking about her 'Uncle Jack' and presenting him with a recording of an alien language and pictures of a weapons stockpile. I'd left a few hints about the past between Jack and Maggie and figured the bigbang might be the perfect chance to delve into their history.
But what would that history entail?
Then I remembered the legend of Lake Ronkonkoma. That one male drowns every year, without fail, yet oddly few drowning victims are ever women. That it has strange whirlpools, unusual temperature readings and that its size doesn't seem to be affected by rainfall; in fact it's flooded in years of drought. Add in the story that it's supposedly named after an Indian princess who killed herself when denied her true love and she's the one responsible for luring men to their deaths and you have quite the interesting lake. I could work with that.
And thus the story behind "Legends and Legacies" was born. There was still the matter of that twenty thousand words or so to write, and figuring out just what baddie was in the lake, and how to tie together the 1950's and modern day stories, etc, etc, etc. *pfft* Minor detail.
What others said:
"what an intriguing idea. I liked this a lot. very fun. "
"…The plot was really interesting, and the interaction between Jack, Tosh and Ianto was wonderful…."
"…The nod towards what humans will allow themselves to do in order to gain temporary ecstasy (no pun intended!) was put forward fantastically simply but stated a very true message…"
