Same old... top 100 from 1997 when I graduated HS.

Strikeout for those I hate, bold for those I like, and italics for those I remember, but don't care either way.

1. Candle In The Wind 1997, Elton John
2. Foolish Games/You Were Meant For Me, Jewel
3. I'll Be Missing You, Puff Daddy and Faith Evans
4. Un-Break My Heart, ( Read more... )

I'm amazed at how few of those I remember. But I was mostly listening to alternative in 1997, and the best songs of that genre mostly didn't make the mainstream top 100. Tubthumping is one that I did spot; that started on the alternative charts and crossed over.

I wandered over to billboard.com to see what charts I would actually see there. Most of them require a paid subscription, but they let you look at the Hot 100 (songs) and Top 200 (albums) from 1, 5, 10, and 20 years ago -- or actually only the first half of each of those. I looked at the 10 year ago Hot 50 (August 1, 1998) and saw exactly ONE song that I would have heard on FNX - Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys.

What else... I remember the Macarena because of doing the Boston/NY AIDS Ride. The dance was the latest craze at the time of the ride (September 1996); the cool club people were doing it but it hadn't gone mainstream yet. But the cyclists caught on fast; a couple of thousand people in bike clothes doing the dance together is a sight to see. After a while it got tired, but I still think it would make a better crowd dance for weddings than the ones they actually do.

And I have to own up to liking Barbie Girl. It probably helps that I wasn't listening to mainstream radio, so I only heard it occasionally rather than having it pounded into my brain to excess.
