I have a question for all my musically knowledgeable friends (cough, especially Billy, cough cough).
Does anyone know of a good acoustic or live recording of Pancho and Lefty, preferably by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, but at least using their "version" of the song (it's hard to explain, but I really like the subtle changes they made to the Townes Van Zandt original).
I normally love Emmylou Harris, but I don't like her version of the song. Ditto for Steve Earle.
I have their original/studio version, but I'd like to find something with a grittier production. The early 80's "sound" of the track is not, I think, the optimal style.
Ideally, I'd want a production style closer to Rick Rubin and Johnny Cash's "American Recordings," but just a slightly raw live recording would be fine, too.
Thanks!
