I washed up in the good shower this morning. If that is the good shower, I don’t even want to know what the others ones are like. The water pressure is way too high. The bathrooms are co-ed, which isn’t so bad. There is no awkward gawking, so I don’t feel uncomfortable. The coed showers are part of the theme. All the dorms on campus have some sort of theme to them: the freshman dorms, the quiet dorms, the athlete dorms. On the south side of campus is where I am in the Third World dorms, which is basically a dormitory for all underrepresented minorities, including the transgendered and intersexed people. There are more than I thought, hence the coed bathrooms.
Third world is connected to the Spanish, African, Asian, German, and French houses. It’s like one big complex, which looks like it used to be part of a cafeteria
Friday morning I went to my first class, drawing. The professor let me participate. So for three hours I drew some boxes with weird shadows, just like in Dave’s class. The professor’s music ranged from Miles Davis to what I think was Depeche Mode, which made for an interesting art experience. After that I blew off my other class to wander around campus and explore stuff. I went to a gallery and saw some really awesome paintings, and explored a little of downtown Oberlin. All 2 Blocks of it. I made my way back to my dorm on accident, and went to the TV room. There me and some of the college students had a discussion on my Candy Shop is such a stupid song, and why 50 Cent is over-hyped. These are my kind of people.
I actually did some community service at an after-school daycare. I drew chalk things on the sidewalk with the kids. Eventually, I ended up making balloon animals. Add that to the list of things I suck at.
I ate dinner at the African heritage house, which tried its best to serve southern style home cookin’. They just don’t know. The food on campus in general has a bland problem. Nothing taste like anything
After dinner was the ceremony for all the prospies. A few former alumni spoke. A guy got up and spoke about Vernon Johnson, who is responsible for the whole program. I would have liked to know about him, but I kept nodding off. Somewhere in there, me and the Forshey look alike wandered around campus looking for the break dance demonstration. Her name is Nadya by the way, and she isn’t white, she’s Puerto Rican, but she’s from Utah, so I suppose that explains something
When we did finally get to the Break Dance displays it was packed, but I must say, it has been the highlight of my trip here so far. Those guy were talented. They had every race represented, which I thought was cool. They were just really good, and I think I got some nice pictures. I had a great time there. At one point, they turned off the lights and asked everybody to put their lighters up. But nobody had lighters so they put up their cell phones instead. That was so hot.
Then me and a few of the Latina girls from the program went back to her dorm room and watched Amelie (sp?). It was so weird because I already knew the music because for a while that was all Kevin knew how to play. When the movie was over, they took me to Meringue Madness. I had my first stab at Salsa dancing. Again, add that to the list of things I suck at. But one of the girls from L.A. said I could fake it well enough
Me and Nadya left after like an hour and a half. Some dudes outside told us about a party they just came from, so we thought we would go hit that up down town. On the way, we kept seeing this roaming bicycles gang blasting classical music, which was just weird. Every time we say the police, we went in the opposite direction and eventually we ended up at a party. We stayed for like 2 minutes, because the place was just not our crowd. Trying too hard to be intelligent. I walked Nadya back home, and I finished of the night…or morning…whatever, I watched cartoons n the lounge till I fell asleep.
Man that was long. Congrats to anyone who actually reads this.
