Revenge of the Curse of Dave

Jun 14, 2006 10:06

Some might wonder what I'm doing posting at this time of the morning. Well, the Curse of Dave has struck yet again. Jeff should remember this particular curse, but for those who don't know what the Curse of Dave is, I shall attempt to explain.

Any time something goes wrong for a victim of the Curse of Dave, it goes wrong in the most bizarre, inconvenient, and expensive way possible. Preventative measures are useless against this particular curse. The curse also endeavors to make the victim seem crazy when he tries to explain the hoops they must jump through to get even the simplest thing accomplished.

Case in point: I am still recovering from my surgery, and that's going ok as far as that goes, but I still must use a cane to walk and, most importantly for this story, stand. I was attempting to stand up from my bed last night, and my cane slipped on something, causing me to put weight on the bionic knee, causing it to buckle, causing me to fall, causing me to reach for my nightstand, causing my glasses to fall, causing my hand to come down on them and snap them at the bridge. Normally, this would require a bit of tape for a stopgap measure, then going to Optimeyes after work for a new pair, but recall the Curse. The bridge broke too close to one of the lenses for tape to be effective, so I had to use some of my time from work so I could get glasses this morning. No big deal, except we're so shortstaffed at work that I feel horrible for using this time again so soon after taking Friday off, even if both of them were for valid medical reasons. So I finally am able to get to Optimeyes to get a pair of glasses when phase two kicks in. I can't use my insurance to get new glasses because my insurance requires me to wait for the lenses that they grind to come back from their own lab. Nevermind that my insurance is good at Optimeyes and they have a lab right there. No, that would violate the terms of the Curse. So instead of paying the copay for lenses and frames, I have to buy a whole new pair of glasses.

On the positive side, excpet for a few lurches and pains, and falling three times, my knee is healing very well. I just spoke with the doctor and he said that the stress put on the stitches from the falls isn't a big deal unless they start to bleed, which they haven't. He said that it should only take me about 10 days to be able to walk without the cane, a vast improvement over my last surgery. Last time I wasn't even out of the hospital in 10 days. So that's very reassuring, as is the fact that I can hibble without the cane for a little bit if I absolutely must, not that I've tried for more than two steps, because it HURTS. Hopefully this will be the last bout with pain in my right knee for a good long time. Anyway, let us hope that the Curse has done its evil work for today.
