The Soul of a Technician

So today I went to the dojo, and spent about an hour getting back to basics. There is something wrong with my stance, and minus the camcorder, I can't figure out what it is. After doing my shadow fighting routines lately (I call it that because I include takedowns) I've noticed that my right knee is aching, and the muscles along the outside of my left leg feel slightly strained. Nothing too terribly bad, but there is definitely a pull that shouldn't be there, and I want to see what I'm doing different. In sparring sessions with both Bill and Matt, I did it up old school, caught Matt with Hanuman grabs the Stars (also known as me jumping up and dropping two elbows upside his head) and Bill with both a Cobra (leaning away from a punch and countering with a punch to the face plus the added power of all my weight going into it) and Knight throws a Spear (elbow to the face). Yay for Muay Thai.

I haven't been able to do any groundwork for awhile, and that's quite frustrating. In the meantime, I have been working out all the kinks that develop when you take a long time off of training, such as reviewing my form and doing some little tweaking. Working with Khoury last night, he pointed out that I was using my jab as too much of a power punch and not a setup for a nice solid left cross. Also, I've changed the delivery of my rear snap kicks, incorporating the technique used in Krav Maga, which leaves me standing on the ball of my foot after throwing the rear snap, but generates enormous power. The front snap is still going to be a teep kick used for maintaining distance. Other than that I'm not making any major changes to my standing fighting style, other than the continued incorporation of wing chun infighting techniques, including using the elbows as a blocking tool.

Tonight, Gretchen is coming over to have bad movies inflicted on her while I ice myself down, doesn't that sound lovely?
