Today, I...
-bought a carton of smokes
-went out for sushi w/ Lucies
-took a few swings at the local batting cages
-shot the ol' BB gun
-played w/ Andrew's dog for a while
So my parents have nixed my plans for having a pet cricket this summer. Apparently loud, chirping insects with an alarmingly high reproductive rate are cause for concern.
PFFT!

One day, my cat knocked the lizard-arium over. We got our anole, Morph, back into temporary housing - though I have always secretly suspected the strain shaved years off of his already scant life span. But that cat came to a bad, sorry end - that's another woeful tale, for another time.
The crickets, about five or six at that time, all got free. Most of them just tried to get out of the house, I think. A few set up shop by the water heater, and they had babies. Which made cricket noises. In the basement. But maybe they were just crickets who had snuck into the basement through the same holes the other crickets snuck out through.
The moral of the story: if your house is like mine, it will probably have crickets whether you have a cricket that escapes or not. And if they do get in your house - either from outside, or from escape - they'll just go live in places that crickets usually live, anyway. They won't be on the kitchen table - they'll be down in your basement, next to a crate holding a comprehensive collection of vintage issues of Soldier of Fortune.
