If his morning routine hadn't been so thoroughly ingrained into his system Ryan was sure he might have sliced a vein while shaving or lost a finger, or two, while making breakfast. His mind just wasn't rooted in the 'here and now' but on that damned letter; on what his brother had ultimately sent him. And it wasn't even something the youngest Wolfe could ignore either! Something of which Ryan knew he'd end up cursing about once the shock wore off. However, for the moment, he was comfortably numb to the situation.

Well, that was until he'd managed to stumble his way into work and subsequently into the clutches of the one person in all of Miami that would not only refuse to let him get away with being completely and utterly distracted while on the clock but also kept him in check, both personally and professionally. The newest CSI thanked every deity he could think of that it wasn't a familiar, if somewhat amusing, shock of strawberry red but a deep, beautiful brunette, complete with curls. Though, if he were honest, Ryan was sure he could at least get away with a few hurried excuses if it had been Horatio and not Alexx that had cornered him at reception.

She'd been nothing but quiet kindness and maternal worry, asking what was wrong with her baby. God only knew how much he loved the way she fussed over him. He might find it annoying and beyond exasperating at times but to be the sole focus of that intensity, that genuine affection - It did his soul some good to know that at least someone cared about him. She wasn't his biological Mother but she treated him like one of her own.

Unfortunately that didn't make things any easier.

But he told her. Everything. He didn't leave a single detail out, even going so far as to finally allow some of his lingering anger and guilt tint his words as he recalled the reasons behind his brother's and his estrangement. He never understood why Tim didn't love and accept him but Ryan still cared. That was readily apparent when he choked up trying to explain what the Will entailed. He kept stopping, trying to regain his composure, and starting again, but each time he couldn't get more than a few more words past clenched muscles.

Alexx ceased his struggles after only a few seconds, pulled him tight against her chest, and soothed her hand along his spine, cooing against the shell of his ear all those comforts she afforded to her babies. She held firm against his struggles, flatly refusing to let him go even when first Calleigh then Eric came to call him to work. One steely glare from Alexx sent both CSIs running without a second glance. She and Ryan both knew that Horatio wouldn't be far behind those retreating bodies, but for the moment they were left alone - Alexx kept rocking him like a child and he clung to the comfort.

Horatio would later find out, from Alexx, that his youngest CSI was sent home with strict orders to rest. Ryan had been in no shape to do more than that. He'd need all his strength for what was to come, and she made it very clear that she was going to be there every step of the way. Alexx hoped that the others, when Ryan felt comfortable enough to tell them, would be supportive, but for now she would be content to know that Horatio not only understood but would be there for them both.

Even if only one out of the three knew what it was like to raise a child.
