This is the letter I am sending out to my friends and family.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
January 2007
Dear ____________,
I would like to take a moment to tell you about an amazing opportunity I have in front of me this upcoming summer.
Cross-Cultural Solutions, a non-profit volunteer organization, offers a program that places volunteers in countries all over the world, including:
-Brazil
-China
-Costa Rica
-Ghana
-Guatemala
-India
-Morocco
-Peru
-Russia
-South Africa
-Tanzania
-Thailand
In each of these countries several service projects are offered, such as teaching English, caring for at-risk children and infants, teaching in low-budget schools, assisting medical professionals in developing rural areas, and many other services.
I have signed up for the program in Moshi, Tanzania, a small rural community at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. My exact placement is unknown at this time, but I will most likely be placed in an orphanage helping children, or helping women to learn basic job and business skills.
What I learn in this program will enable me to clearly witness what my future goals have been and are (helping others), and give me a broader and deeper knowledge of my exact goals of study throughout college, after which I hope to continue a life devoted to this kind of service.
All Cross-Cultural Solutions programs are run solely by volunteer contributions, and therefore each program has a fee. The fee for this 3-week program, running July 28 - August 18, including all meals, lodging, travel medical insurance, and in-country transportation, totals $2761 and does not include airfare to Tanzania (which will lie between $2000-$4000).
I am writing this information to you because I hope you might be able to assist me. I cannot possibly fund this trip on my own. If you know of any individuals who may be able to assist me financially, I would greatly appreciate you passing this on to them. Also, if you know of any businesses or organizations that might have scholarship funds available for me to apply for, that information would be greatly appreciated. I have enclosed information on how to contribute on a separate page.
All contributions made through the Cross-Cultural Solutions organization are 100% tax-deductible.
If you have any questions, feel free to send me a letter, or call me at (714) 595-9786. You may also call Cross-Cultural Solutions directly at 1-800-380-4777, or visit the website,
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and I hope to hear from you soon. I look forward to sharing this extraordinary experience with you upon my return.
Yours,
Katrina Locke (Tasha)
