Losing a Friend

"No rest for the wicked, Commander. We are all being shipped out to Germany." Ben Carville appeared on screen, packing up documents in a briefcase.

Tanya raised a brow at the comm-screen, connected to the three-way conference from St. Louis while The Commander listened in from Atlanta and General Carville transmitted from Washington. "What are the Reds up to, General?"

Carville paused to strap on his pistols, shaking head. "Romanov is no fool, Lieutenant. While we pushed that rabid dog Vladimir back, they are preparing an assault into the Black Forest."

"Einstein's lab." The woman frowned.

"Of course." Carville picked up his suitcase and moved to the door. "While the Commander and I organize a counter-offensive, I want you to hook up with the rangers and militia in the area and keep Vladimir the Sam Hill away from that lab. Einstein and his inventions are our ace in the hole." He paused with a hand on the doorknob.

"We can not afford to lose him or the facility. Our experts think..." Carville pulled the door open and stopped talking when he saw the man with maniac eyes standing in the hallway; the next second the suicide bomber's payload detonated, and the screen filled with static.
