☁  prologue
Do Kyungsoo loves the rain.

Rain that comes gushing down from the grey skies morning, day or night, splashing endlessly against the ground in soft and continuous rhythms whilst producing a thousand aesthetically therapeutic ripples on the surface of growing puddles.
Rain that washes away the daily buildup of one’s simmering stress, including the dirt and grunge that lingers in the city air.
Rain that marks the end of summer and the beginning of a cosy autumn filled with falling browning leaves and the prospect of plenty of hot chocolate by the fire.

Most rain lovers would prefer light drizzles but for Kyungsoo he tended to prefer heavy rain pour.

The skies seemed to be in favour of the former lately.

Every single day it had rained since the start of term.

Kyungsoo loved it.

“It’s been raining for weeks!” a student with light auburn locks groaned as he tore his eyes away from the window revealing light downpour from the other side. He felt around the ends of his curling hair and frowned in dismay, “it’s messing up my hair.”

Another student sniffed the air, “I can smell burning.”

“Crap!”

Auburn-locks leapt off his stool to retrieve a charred unidentified object from an oven.

Kyungsoo could never quite understand as to how this one student can fail his idiot-proof recipes every single time.

Rather than committing himself to a boring office job in central London he very much preferred holding small cooking classes at a nearby university for students who came to live independently with little to no skills. Such classes were held in the evening at six o’clock, a convenient time for busy students who needed to learn and eat dinner.

Despite being mocked for his childlike appearance Kyungsoo was very popular amongst the students. He was easy going and friendly, his patience far better than that of a Spartan like Gordon Ramsey. Spillages and accidents that occurred within the vicinity of the room were always dealt with quickly without a quip of irritation by a calm Kyungsoo. He was an understanding man.

They had never seen Kyungsoo blowing a fuse.

Amongst his students there was one student in particular who had always caught his eye. Always situating himself at the back, a tall lean dark skinned boy with jet black hair would quietly listen to Kyungsoo’s instructions and followed everything to the dot, and often stare at him. His hands would move quickly and sometimes clumsily when it came to cooking. Sometimes Kyungsoo would see his mixing bowl threatening to fall off the edge of the table, but he would always notice before it actually managed to successfully tip over. He was always incredibly alert.

At least he never burnt a cake, overcooked chicken, or fried an egg to the point that it made the fire alarms go off.

Kyungsoo had never spoken a word to him, and neither did he. He could never really find the time and opportunity to approach and converse with him; there were always few students in his class that would grab him for help before he could even make it to the back, one of them being the overenthusiastic auburn-locks who joined the cooking class because he was eager to learn on how to cook and prepare the best meal ever for his boyfriend. He was the clumsiest student as well, the one who causes most if not all of the kitchen accidents.

“If I covered it in icing with beautiful decorations on top I can use it as a centerpiece,” auburn-locks murmured to himself as he began to take icing sugar out of the cupboard.

Sighing, the student next to him offered to make the icing for him, because the last time auburn-locks tried to make icing the area within a 3 meter radius was covered in white powder.

Before the student even had the chance to mix the ingredients it was already the end of the session, auburn-locks let out a strangled cry as he dumped the inedible baked good into a nearby bin whilst the dark skinned boy left the room instantly with a seemingly decently baked Victoria cake.

Kyungsoo mentally noted to try and catch him next time before he left. He was curious as to how the food that the boy had made tasted, as well as the sound of his voice.

“I’m Kai.”

A few days later the rain poured heavily, serving as a strangely complimentary backdrop to the boy’s voice that sounded like a mix of velvet and adolescence with a dash of warm chocolate. Bizarre analogies but they were really the only words that the elder could think of upon hearing Kai’s voice.

Kyungsoo spooned a bit of Kai’s devil’s food cake into his mouth, bit into it and frowned.

It tasted unusually bitter.
