"You can call me Katie" & TINSTAC

Jul 05, 2009 17:34

This morning I went for a pamper session (stiff lower back = 1 hour massage & had my hair coloured - aka getting my roots "done"). The salon (because they're not just hairdressers anymore) has recently employed a new massage therapist, Katie, who everyone has been raving about, so I thought, "why not ( Read more... )

msb66 just told me about TINSTAC the other day.

Tania? How very rude! I think you could have justifiably wielded a wet fish in her direction.

It's an awful feeling when you get someone's name wrong. Not too much to ask, one would have thought, to call a person by their proper name?
As for making a name anglicised, that's a shame. Surely she should be Deepti wherever she is: in her new home, or her old one. What's in a name? Sometimes everything. To think that her sister thought it might make things a little easier is rather upsetting.

I enjoyed the vid! And hope your back is much better.

In my experience Tania is the most common mistake for "Tanuja". People also think I am named after the country of Tunisia (which annoys me the most). No one should insist to rename someone.

I've never had the Tunisian link, but I'll wait for that :)

It's not too much to ask and Deepti isn't that difficult - especially when you consider some of the Gaelic and Celtic names.

Glad you enjoyed the Video xo

When I meet someone new, I just keep repeating my name to them until they repeat it back to me correctly, sometimes 3-4 times, sometimes with the spelling. :)

I have been called "Ta," "nu-nu," "nuj".... what do your friends call you?

Yep, I've done that too. And I did think of you when I was writing this, because I suspect you've gone through the same issues as I have.

The nicknames are: Tan, Nuj, Nuja, Nuji, Ted (from Ted Nugent), Tu (from the "Tea for two and two for tea" song) & "Slapper" by a very good friend. (Her emails usually start with "Morning Slapper", but then when we were at different colleges, so did her letters, so nothing's changed over the last 20 years).

The right to call me by a nickname depends on how much I like a person.

Yay, to Tanuja nicknames! :) Since I've rejected nicknames except for my family calling me "Ta" I now have the challenge to let a friend nickname me.... will be thinking of how you give people you like more the right to nickname you.
