John called last night, the phones have been down most of the time so they are allowing SAT calls. They are 10 minutes and he has to dance around because the satellite is always moving so I hear every third word. Better than not hearing from him at all! :)
I took a bunch of books to Half Price books (or something like that, in Redmond) and decided to try to find some history books on Afghanistan. The only one that came close was a journalist who was trying to take time off - and spent 10 years living in Afghanistan (1993-2003).
"The Carpet Wars" is what came of it and the first few chapters delve directly into how to recognize which rug came from which tribe - the differences are striking but its not something an American would recognize or understand why the patterns are the way they are, or the colors used.
So I mentioned it to John and I know he will now be looking at the floor when he enters a tribal leaders hut, scoping out the rug. He will start to recognize patterns, colors and fibers used knowing that one tribe really is associated with another, or not at all. Guess I'll have to make a quick read of it and send it to him, it would help him to understand more about who he is dealing with.
Thats a big part of his job so this would probably help and its the one thing about the region he didn't know about. I feel speshul for that :P
