Goodbye Kep

Today, my colleague Rea put her dog, Kep, down. I was there at the vet when the sodium pentathol was administered. He went peacefully.

Kep was a twelve-year old sheltie. He has been her constant companion, coming in to work with her almost every day. He loved to play frisbee (and was very good at it) and to beg for food. I used to throw frisbee for him for an hour and he would not tire.

His degeneration was fast. Just a few weeks ago, he was chasing frisbee. Then, one day, he was blind. The vet originally thought that it was complications from Lyme's disease. It got worse and worse. It looks like some kind of very aggressive lymphatic cancer. He had growths on his liver, gall bladder, and in his eyes. Both the vet and the specialist said that there was nothing that they could do.

I spent some time with Kep before helping to get him to the vet. We spent a lot of time talking to the vet about the options, but putting him down seemed like the only one. He probably would have lived a couple more days, but would have been in a lot of pain.

The sodium pentathol was administered around 2 this afternoon. Kep was dead within minutes. Afterward, Rea brought her other sheltie, Oliver, into the room to sniff the body.

Kep was a wonderful dog and will be greatly missed.
