» Flair Type: ACTIVATED
» Fitting in: Works as a male nurse (oh, the horror!) at a sleep clinic, moonlights as a horror novelist.
» History: One of the thousand sons of Hypnos, the god of sleep, and part of the black-winged Oneiroi (Όνειροι, spirits of dreams), Epiales was the Underworld daimon who assaulted sleepers giving them nightmares. The Oneiroi emerged each night like a flock of bats from Erebos, the land of eternal darkness beyond the rising sun located on the shores of the ocean in the extreme west, close to the Underworld. The Oneiroi were sent to mortals through one of two gates located there: the first gate was made of horn and the source of the prophetic god-sent dreams, while the other, constructed of ivory, was the source of dreams which were false and without meaning. The truthfulness of the dreams Oneiroi gave to men and gods depended on which gate they passed through while exiting their cave. There was also said to be a wilted elm tree in Morpheus' domain, upon which the dreams fashioned by the Oneiroi hung, with the appearance of winged phantom-shapes.
While Morpheus was the most powerful of the Oneiroi, Epiales was the original creator of nightmares. He should not be mistaken with Icelus (who men called Phobetor), as Icelus appeared in dreams as images of beasts, birds and serpents and could only shape the nightmares into whatever he wished them to be. Epiales could only create random terrors and was the one who made the nightmares that lingered in people's subconsciousness come to life in their dreams. Apart from that, very little is known of Epiales (and if you ask him, he likes it that way).
» Personality: First and foremost Epiales is an observer. But he isn't fully satisfied with just simply taking notes and watching - he also wants to take part, influence, change the things that are happening around him. He quickly adapts to anything and everything and often slightly adjusts his personality and mannerisms depending who he's talking to. It's not about deceiving or manipulating people if you ask him. It's more about accommodating to the situation he's in and because he's a very social creature and enjoys the company of others, he does his best to keep the people around him interested in his personality. One shouldn't misunderstand his motives: Epiales isn't dependent on the presence of others, but he enjoys getting to know his peers and loves to learn about their secrets and especially their greatest fears.
He can be - and often is - very charming, usually choosing his words carefully and making the people around him feel comfortable enough to keep them talking. Epiales is extremely interested in how people work, what makes them tick and why they are afraid of the things they fear the most. It's a hobby of sorts for him, something he's very passionate about, but it's also the reason why he doesn't have many "friends", creatures or deities he's close with. As soon as he thinks he's fully figured someone out, his interest in them will fade and he will soon move on to someone new.
The manner in which he moves and presents himself is very relaxed and carefree with a constant twinkle in his eye. Epiales is definitely a ladies' man. This love for women is something completely new to him as it's a trait he discovered once he became human. Giving his undivided attention to whoever he's got his eye on is a thrill, but Epiales also enjoys knowing the women he touches will spend the next night rolling in their beds, covered in cold sweat as their dreams are filled with horrifying images. He doesn't want to think he's 'using women' - he'd rather say he appreciates the beauty around him. He's careful to never promise anyone anything which in his mind makes his behavior alright. It's not his fault if they assume he'll be there in the morning, or that he'd be interested in anything else than just a short-lived affair.
Epiales' greatest weakness is his dislike for authority and while he is mostly very calm and laid back, being told what to do will cause his temper to flare. He will rebel against anyone who tries to make him obey their rules. As he doesn't enjoy physical violence or heated arguments, he will simply try to find a way to break every single rule that's been set, not caring about the consequences.
The greatest source of amusement for him is his 'gift'. He enjoys walking past people and brushing his hand against them, excited about the fact that he's somehow changed their lives, even if it is only in the form of nightmares. To him it's a very harmless source of fun; after all, it's just dreams, and just for one night. No harm done, honestly. He would prefer to keep his little ability a secret from the others Gaia and Khaos are toying with, just for the sake of entertainment. It's just much more fun to give nightmares to people and hear them talk about them when they have no idea you're actually the reason behind them, now isn't it?
» Sample Journal: New York. I love this city, the people, lights, sounds, all of it. It's simply a dream come true.
Who cares about boring old Greece, when you've got New York right at your fingertips.
» Sample Roleplay: The hood of his coat was pulled down low to conceal his eyes from the people he passed by, but there was a small wicked smile on his lips as he moved among the crowd. His long, cold fingers touched an elbow here, a shoulder there, moving swiftly and silently among the poor little bastards who had no idea of the nightmares they'd have that night. Oh, they were blissfully oblivious. For now.
The sun was slowly setting behind the skyscrapers and the night was still so very young, and Epiales couldn't stop himself from smiling wider. He was doing his daily rounds, as he'd so cleverly christened them. Every afternoon he'd leave the clinic to find the most crowded places he could find, taking as many detours as possible. He didn't care of ethnicity, gender, age, not one single bit. All he cared about was touching as many people as possible, sharing his 'gift' with anyone and everyone who crossed his path.
Sure, there was just the slightest drawback to this nifty little skill of his: he was completely and utterly unable to enjoy the fruits of his labor. In this stupid mortal body of his he was unable to visit anyone's dreams, unable to view the hellish visions they'd be tormented with. Fully and completely unable to do anything other than just make sure everyone he touched would wake up covered in cold sweat, nervous to close their eyes again until the morning light would peek through their curtains. A small setback, honestly. He shouldn't let it bother him at all, so why did it make him feel so impotent?
A low chuckle escaped his lips as he passed a very attractive redhead who turned to smile at him. Epiales winked at her, stopping in his tracks to think for a second. It was a while since he'd shared his bed with a woman and the urge to feel a woman's soft skin against his own was almost as great as the need to see her tossing and turning in her sleep. The small smile on his lips widened to a grin as he walked to her, feeling like a fox in the hen-house. This was going to be fun.
