This show is now a confirmed joke. It never really took itself seriously after all and all the "darker, more mature" banners of series 5 are just a cover, a lush front window that hides the decay inside.
I think TPTB were unprepared for the success of Merlin. All their other shows lasted up to two series, no more. They never had to write for more than two series. The success got to their heads, their egos grew and the ball was lost. Their lack of writing talent, imagination and long term planning finally shone through the pompous words. The end result, well, lacks to put it mildly.
It's not even TV for 10-year-olds anymore, as 10-year-olds know right and wrong, good and bad, acceptable and unacceptable. Hiding and lying for 10 years is ridiculous. "I have to protect Arthur, therefor magic has no place in Camelot" is an oxymoron than only a moron would write and yet we saw it. As another fan in a forum said, does Shine or/and BBC not have quality control?? Who allowed this crap?
The fandom as a whole is really frustrated now. Even the most fanatic of fanatics, the fans with the pink glasses, are seeing the negativism all over the Merlin forums. Some reviewers are struggling to keep up the happy mood, but fan-reviewers are getting restless and dare to point the elephants. The show is in its final season and instead of soaring, it's sinking in staleness.
Fortunately, 5x05 cured me from my love. I'm now completely detached and not giving a damn. I saw 5x6 and felt nothing. Will I see 5x07? The Queen of Two Masters? Out of habit, maybe yes. But I'm not crying or even laughing anymore. I don't care one bit. I'm just MEH.

I'm glad they are. It's about time TPTB get the feedback they deserve in a voice loud enough even they can't pretend not to hear it.
I think that's what is bothering me though...I don't think TPTB ARE getting the feedback. How would they in this fandom? They work so hard to isolate themselves from the fans. Other than bombarding MO on Twitter...what forum for telling the TPTB that everyone's miserable is there? And is there a point when it's already in the can anyway?
I think the places they look are Digital Spy and twitter. And neither I think is very up for telling them anything other than they want to hear? All I see in responses to gushing net reviews and previews is fans saying how much they're loving it. So...
Im only really seeing unhappiness in places like this and on LJ - maybe the odd tumblr - but unfortunately in the more mainstream places like say Digital Spy or the Cult sites the fans who post seem happy with anything they're given. Some are only concerned if they get an Arwen kiss or if they get seen in a bed together, some only care if Morgana gets some screen time, some are happy if theres good CGI or a fight, or a little magic. I don't see any kind of groundswell of wider fan unhappiness, sadly so I doubt they're aware everyone isn't doing triple somersaults from sheer joy.

Mind you, if twitter gets going about the new spoilers they may just hear something they need to hear :P
