I think your Ken Follett analogy is an interesting one and I take the point I think - the thing TPTB never fail to enjoy is bad things (I mean lastingly painful things) happening to Merlin as a character, even as at the other end of the spectrum, we all know well in advance that Gwen as a character never suffers for long and is always rewarded for any suffering she endures. This season she spends 3 episodes enchanted apparently after being 'tortured' by Morgana Icough) but does anyone expect that to leave the slightest impact on her once its over? Her character isn't allowed the depth to actually suffer real loss or damage. Even Arthur and Morgana get to feel lasting pain and emotional scars. I often wonder why they decided to reduce Gwen The Moral Compass to the cipher that she's become. But given that they have, I truly don't understand why they persist in focussing so much precious time on a dramatically empty character - the most boring and predictable on the show by a long long way and I include Morgana's panto plotting in that too. Ah well...
