I don’t know.  I should probably admit that I was expecting/hoping for a different episode than the one we got, so I’m actually reviewing the wrong thing. I know too that I’m stlll wearing my Traumatised By S4 Pt 2 goggles. But I can still see that there was alot to appreciate.  We were given the, now rare, treat of an episode centred almost ( Read more... )

Hi Arwyn! I actually cant remember an episode I've felt more torn over.

On the one hand all that lovely Arthur/Merlin which Colin and Bradley milked to the utmost; on the other disappointment at a fantastic opportunity missed to do something with even a bit of depth. I would have loved Uther to have found some wisdom in death instead of turning into a 2D caricature of himself. They just wanted a baddie, and that was Uther. But the chances lost to actually look where Camelot and Arthur are.. Uther is the author of everything thats happening in the show now, yet he was just used as a chance to do a haunted house ep and a reinforcement of the image of Arthur as a nice guy - even though we don't know if he's actually killing magic users or not. That was what I hated about the ep.

But there was alot to love and thats whats leaving me conflicted. Im aware that this may be the sop thrown to fans of the Merlin-Arthur connection before its all torn apart by the Arthur's plot-convenient mancrush on Mordred and there will have to be some genuflecting to the Disney romance. So I *want* to love it wholeheartedly and as I said to Bee at her journal, I may find if theres a great reveal this season and the issues fled from in this ep episode are addressed that Death Song becomes a future favourite. I just cant switch off my critical facilities right at the moment. Maybe there's a tablet I can take for it :-P
