On Stranger Tides

Mar 23, 2011 18:59

Because LCK (on behalf of that no-good Marketing people) conveyed TOA's request to sell off my Vergil artwork for some crap fund-raising drive that already stinks of corruption,

and Ivan, that wholesome bad-boy tutor in today's Mixed Media class, somehow got off with the greatest con in TOA history.

1.LCK, TOA and the Fund-Raising Conspiracy

Last Tuesday, LCK came in with Lisa, and before the presentation for the epic!Shadow-Storytelling project, he called out 5 of our names, in this order:

Chuah Shih Shin
Lee Wei Yang
Lim Kean Weoi
Lydia Ling
Tan Lammy

And told us to see them for 5 minutes.

We reluctantly got out of our seats, and naturally, we feared the worst:

>We failed something?
>TOA caught us doing something that may unmade TOA
>We are too good for TOA and poses a threat for everyone else and must be removed immediately
(hey, this list itself has some powerfully-talented people in it, like Kami-sama)

And LCK saw that we looked skittish, so he calmed us down by saying he's not going to eat us.
(GO GO TEH WALKING HORROR)

Then he broke the news:
(well, along with the email printout that the Marketing Dept. has given him)

There is a fundraising campaign in end-April to create awareness about animal abuse and aims to instil love for animals in humans.
(it's as written inside the bloody email, I swear it)

And they have shortlisted our works that they deemed presentable, has market value and commerical enough to be sold.

Our artworks will be sold via auction, with the public as the bidders.

In return for our "generous contribution and participation", TOA will give us

> our work back as HI-RESOLUTION SOFT COPY (DIGITAL)
> a certificate, thanking you for participating

Then, LCK showed us our works, printed on 2 A4s.

One of it, was my acrylic on gesso assignment, [Vergil]
Kami-sama's was his awesome vintage car (product), and hot cowgirl (final gesso).
Lydia's was her portrait and the evil jester (final).
Kean Woei's was his Wolverine piece (final).
For some reason, I can't remember Shih Shin's.

Moments after LCK finished delivering his message, the first thing that happened is

Yours truly balking and going, "WHAT?! NO WAY!"

Shortly followed by Kami-sama going, "Er...I just want my artworks back D:"

And KW voicing our doubt, "EHH? Our hard work for 2 weeks, change become digital only? DD:<"

Lydia brought up the one single doubt we all shared ---
"Most of our works (on the paper), are based on an actual photo reference.

Wouldn't there be like, some copyright issue?"

Lisa replied, "That's the thing - we tried to hammer this point into the Marketing Dept's brains but dunno they thought of the implications or not. At the very worst case, is people either sue you (as the artist) or TOA.

"Go sue TOA la, better." Awkward jokes abound, before

Shih Shin was mulling over it for a long while before saying, "Why not give it a try?"

Lydia, bright girl she was, she stopped SS by saying, "You mad ah?? It's just not worth it you know!"

LONG discussion short, it was a resounding NO from our class.

Which led to LCK remarking weird stuff:

"Haaah, I'm proud you guys make this wise decision. At least you guys are smarter."

O__________O was mostly on our faces.

And then he continued, "But since like this (happened), TOA might take it that you guys are rebelling.
Coz this is like some form of rebellion."

I stopped LCK by saying,"No la sir, we students got our students rights mah, we got the rights to say yes or no (on selling our artworks.)"

The discussion comes to an end, with us suggesting instead to LCK to

go "discuss" with the Marketing people, and tell them that we don't mind doing a new artwork that can RELATE to the animal abuse theme for them. Heck, we can churn them easily with digital if you give us time (just not now).

When I told Talissa and Nad about this, they agree with our class's decision.

I mean,

Who the HELL in their right mind will trade off their

hardwork + sleep-deprived 3-weeks worth of blood, sweat and tears and

get just a non-physical digital soft copy version instead

together with a piece of cheap paper with ink on it?

I for one ain't doing it.

Hell no way.

I'll do as I please with Vergil, but I'm definitely NOT selling it off to raise funds for this dodgy campaign - TOA-endorsed or not.

Yeah sure, we know the bouts of animal abuse happening lately, but does that make it an excuse for TOA to sell off our works JUST so they can get side-incomes off students??

And "funds to help SPCA and related NGOs"? GIMME A BREAK.

Ya'd think the locals will buy students' artworks to help support an abused/abandoned animal?

JUST HOW MUCH OF THE PROFITS FROM THE SALE GOES TO THE POOR ANIMAL ANYWAY???

Not to mention that Talissa added one more con:

"If by bidding, and people just bid RM10 and only that one person in the entire room bid that price,
means like, your own artwork that you've put so much effort is, is only worth that much? DD:"

I added moar oil:

"It's not the money issue here.
I'm more concerned that the auntie/uncle who bought our work for RM10, will just chuck it to some corner of their storeroom and prolly show it to their grandchildren when they do drop by DDDDD: Coz what use is our commercial-ish work for an uncle? Or for a family?"

Imagine, my Vergil artwork sitting in one dusty corner in a friendly-kind-animal-loving uncle's little home.

TO HELL WITH THAT IMAGE, MAN!

Now, I'm hoping what Kami-sama is hoping --- to get our artworks back, and hopefully in one piece D;
TOA be damned if my Vergil is lost to me in their money-spinning scheme DDD<

(I'll probably go on strike and set their main block on FIRE. Now, that would be awesome.)

2. Ivan, one of the greatest Con-tutor in TOA history.

Due to his Gross Misinformation and Misleading Insight,

he'd told us that we need to finish the caricature assignment in 1 week.

It's okay for us, though of course, we don't sleep.
I know I only slept 2 hours,
Lydia didn't sleep at all (coz she was using acrylic for her piece), along with the bunch of Chinese boys,
and Talissa said she ter-slept while doing the work.

And then, when Lion King Sun came in,

sure, he gave the crit, but it was the crit to tell us to refine here and there (which was a bit strange at first).

Then KS dropped da bomb,

"SO okay, you guys can hand this up next week."

Dumbfounded, shocked, disbelief, you want it, we have it plastered on our faces.

KS wasn't so accustomed to so many wide-eyed little horrors looking back at him at midday, so he turned to the tutor and asked something in Chinese -- "When is their work supposed to be due?"

Ivan: "Today mah no meh? D8"

KS tutted and then clarified to us,

"(He/I) forgot to tell you guys, it's supposed that 2 weeks thumbs first then only 2 weeks concentrate on colouring both of the caricatures (one is celebrity, one is classmate). More focus, and more easier for you guys.

But since like this already, it's okay-lah, you guys just pass up next week and show me your thumbs (for the classmate one)".

And then, and ONLY THEN, did we finally go back to normal.

I swear, with our sleep-deprived minds, reaching for a chair/pen/something painful to throw at Ivan is SUPER-TEMPTING.

We recalled clearly what Ivan said juuuuust last week,
"Eh...if your seniors can finish in one week, why not you? >8D"

And then we rushed over the weekends, and Tuesday night, and Wednesday morning....

....but we were too tired to digest the new revelation, so we just shrugged and lepak-ed awhile with KS crit-ing his own work in his own books @ Fung Wan compilations.

But I think next week, the Chinese bunch (who just came, plopped their works on our tables to get us to hand up for them because they wanna go home and sleep) will bring some excitement in class.

Hopefully with some mental or physical pain-inflicting entertainment involved.

Ivan, you stupid git you,

you just conned the whole IL091-1 by making us do a 2-weeks worth of work in within 1 week.
(or rather, 2-days job for me.)

I think I'll want to inflict some pain on him myself.

----------------------

That's all for this round.

Posting at Hogzilla's office here, coz later I'll just go home and die gloriously in my bed.
