WIP at 60% over 4 days, I hope to at least get 80% done by this weekend so that next week I don't have to suffer painting during my midnight-oil-burning nights ( Read more... )

Is it recommended to paint (after water render) in all the major areas's dark tones and mid tones first, to see whether the shapes/forms are right before doing all the tiny detailing?

or

should I continue with my current method now @ painting dark to light area + Detailing by area i.e. from frame to figure to next frame to background, but each area I work on it until it's complete before moving to the next one?I have trouble understanding what you're asking? XD; The water render should be mid-tone to darkest tone FOR THE WHOLE PAINTING. There's no such thing as "subject by subject". So I don't understand painting more "dark tones and mid tones first, to see whether shapes/forms are right" -- this should be done in the water render stage already. Usually by the time I'm done with water render stage the painting already looks finished, it's only my classmates + lecturers that KNOW there should be one more layer of dabbing on top that will say it's unfinished. So by the time I finish water render stage the shapes are already there. I ( ... )

The main purpose of any illo class is to produce beautiful pictures XD; However, realistic figures are harder to paint than simplified animu, that's why your subject tends to focus heavily on it, not for any lofty ideals like "learn facial structure whilst adding colour changes" ^^;

As for your technique, idk without seeing it in person, so if you have got questions whether it's right or not, either go poke Constance or ask your other illo lecturers (I won't ask you to ask KS, although that's the best method ^^;;; ) All I can say is, whichever method looks nicer, that's probably the better method ^^;

Your other lighting option is to hang out at the academy and do your painting in one of the studyrooms/empty classrooms ^^;

I'm stumped on the ringing.... take care of yourself and good luck! ^^;

KS is scary with his dry sense of humour, so I ain't gonna ask him (unless I really reach a dead end =p=;)

Anyway, update with the final!image here and some stuff on what happened during KS's crit session:

I think Director has answered most of what we have learned, it's like doing the Pavorotti painting nya, you have to render all the background + darkest colors, and render whatever dark details you need in the water render stage before going for detailing.

At this stage you have to give priority to the face of the subject, it's most important for figure. If you are tired rendering the face then only you move to the left frame to ease out the tension in your head I guess? If frame render not good oso at least you have kau tim the face d

Rest adequately if you can >.< All nighter will stone you darou~
