WIP at 60% over 4 days, I hope to at least get 80% done by this weekend so that next week I don't have to suffer painting during my midnight-oil-burning nights.
And for some STRANGE reason, I actually find painting 100x less tedious than doing CAD work 0w0;;
In fact, today, I spent a good five hours painting the frame details, and I didn't find it boring/tedious/mind-numbing at all. HONEST.
...and later on, I half-suspected that maybe my work has brainwashed/psycho-ed me into accepting that painting=fun XD;;;
BUT at any rate, it meant my drive for traditional medium hasn't died yet >D
And WIP images (small so your browser can still live XD;) behind this cut.
On Wed night, I reached this state:
Technically the water render stage, but coloured the major parts as the correct water render should be
(and up to this day, there's still at least one poor sod in my class still doing water render in 1 gradient colour. Orz.)
(BTW, this tinny painting area is the space @ the walkway from my front door to my bathroom. Bathroom door's on the left side, top part where all the misc painting stuff are are my 2 sidetables, and the comforter is my bed. So yes --- at one point, I painted with the board stacked against the tinny wall next to the bathroom door because I can't reach the upper part of the board to paint when sitting with my knees crossed.....)
On Thurs, during class, I reached this state:
Made the colours darker, and saw that 60% my colours ran because
the night before, I worked under those yellow halogen lights and it's hard to see the depths/colour changes clearly -___-;
So under white light in TOA's classroom, I made some changes, and painted that dragon there (though not complete / not enough layers).
And on Saturday, I went a bit more further, and as of 7pm I got here:
Face is incomplete, because my Titanium White is going dry/flaky on me (and the Zinc White I have is TOO transparent to work with -___-;), but I managed to finish the right frame.
Right frame details:
...my camera doesn't do the actual work justice -___-; (and yea light bounced on the 2nd pic so it looked...uh...shiny...), coz
at one point, after I stand back to see the overall, I was actually surprised at how 3D the whole painting looked like --- 3D as in, it looked real enough on canvas due to correct colouring of the light and shadow --- and all this, was painted under white light (Mom's office).
So lesson learnt --- NEVER PAINT UNDER YELLOW LIGHT if I want to get the right colours.
And that, yeah, copying every detail as on the ref = getting at least 70-80% on the canvas right 8DDD
THOUGH, while doing all this, I've realized that maybe my work process is too slow, so
I wanna ask:
Is it recommended to paint (after water render) in all the major areas's dark tones and mid tones first, to see whether the shapes/forms are right before doing all the tiny detailing?
or
should I continue with my current method now @ painting dark to light area + Detailing by area i.e. from frame to figure to next frame to background, but each area I work on it until it's complete before moving to the next one?
---------
Had wanted to take over my bathroom to paint, but lack of ventilation made me think twice.
And then I thought to use my lightbox as side illumination, but the light was not bright enough :/
...I should invest in a white lamp or something...
...but my room's got no space / additional socket anymore >---<
And that I should also be going to bed a bit more regularly, my ears's starting to ring again...-___-;;;
