Now, this is the Degree Show, held 5 days just after our degree presentation ;) A LOT of people came in the evening - our studio was actually packed! - booze is going round XD; with Japanese snacks provided by yours truly and Aleks, and then when we're all half-sober/tipsy after the private viewing ends at 9pm, I decided to take some shots of our transformed studio space ^________^
Lj-cut for a coupla images and heheh, summore commentary XD XD XD
First off, a grand panorama shot of our studio! Taken from the back, looking towards the front of the class and around ;)
Left to right: The 2nd main space (where my work is!), our makeshift bar (sadly, we don't own a proper bar like the Animation Studio in the other building has - their space totally ROCKS!! They have bar + club/dance music + video animations of their works, and the experience is pretty cool!!!), and the huge table of sketch models in the 1st main space of the studio.
Let's take a look at my work now!~
Yeap I wore my newly-bought Gothic vest-tailcoat!~~ XD XD XD
I got my very own table-with-shelves XD To put my big-ass site model on it, whereas the shelf can be drawn out to place more stuff. Ben actually TOOK MY SKETCH MODEL APART OMG and placed the bridge onto the site directly - not knowing to place together the grass pavilion for it =.= I had that rectified the next day, 'course. And my wonderful posters! ^_________^
This is actually the 3rd time I enjoyed my poster, and overall, my project - the first is Jimmy's project, the 2nd is my lighting design. ^_______^
Not only that, 2 days later, because of my work (and Aleks too!), we're chosen for an
INTERVIEW! by the uni's 24/7 library @ the LRC (stands for Learning Resource Centre) to be featured in their next editorial/issue ^__________^ It came as a genuine surprise (like, who wants to interview me, ever?? Not in this lifetime no, but it did!), and I am gladly honoured to do it ^_______^ With Aleks too!
The LRC dude conducted the interview, and took our photos with our posters ^__________^
Yea man!!! ZAZHIGAI*!!!
*Zazhigai is LET'S ROCK!!! in Russian XD; As taught to me by Aleks LOL
Now, I'm been rambling a lot about Aleks. Let's meet her in person!
Girl on the left is Aleks ^-^ And we're both standing in front of our hard work - our class poster (with Class '09 branded on it! Ben actually likes my retro idea! XD) and our one-and-only lightbox poster with its own special effect (more on that later).
She's 22 now, but she's married last year to her husband Akim Volkova who's 21 years old (strange huh? But they're very happy together ^-^) We both did the poster and the lightbox-poster together. This, is the story:
The day before the Degree Show, Ben wanted something nice up front at our studio entrance. He asked Aleks to do it, Aleks wanted me to join her and help out (Katya wasn't around that time).
As of 5pm, after working frustratingly slowly with the LRC's computers (I SWEAR, they're the slowest computers in the world - heck, my Mom's ancient desktop works even faster than this!! It's what we told the LRC interviewer, and he says he kinda knew that LOL), we showed the first outcome of the poster(s) to Ben, and he said, "Kinda boring. Need to be more exciting!" and he went on telling us what to add/to do.
Well, stuff Ben. Since after all that work and he still complains it's boring, WELL, we're gonna give him something EXCITING.
So Aleks and I stayed up till 1.30am in the morning at the LRC to do the kick-ass sepia poster and our (heheh) brilliant lightbox-poster - ONE OF ITS KIND ONLY IN THIS FACULTY, AND PERHAPS THE WORLD!
Actually, we finished the poster first - and wanted to hang it up in the studio, and work later on the lightbox poster (which at that time, we didn't conceptualize what you'd seen in this photo - it was just a normal poster with names arranged at the side, and as Ben said, pretty normal/boring).
And we, for the first time in all our time in the uni, got KICKED OUT by the security guard on duty that time - at 10.20pm. Lady guard was VERY surprised to find us in the studio (apparently, they close at 10pm), so she shooed us out to lock the building for the night - saying she had someone waiting, we students not supposed to be there, etc.
Yea we got the picture - so we left the poster on the floor to come back tomorrow morning to hang it up.
And the rest of the hours after that till 1.30am, we worked on my lightbox poster.
Well, Ben wanted something special. We gave him something special ;)
While frantically trying to accomodate his idea of dot-dot-dot-name-dot-dot-dot (until this day, I never got what he meant but we screwed his idea anyway), so we looked up some graphics books in the LRC.
At 12am-ish, upon seeing this very special text-graphics of black and yellow and white and grunge/cool text all over - we both happened to have the same brainwave/EUREKA! moment, and we said to each other, let's do it.
We turned the tracing paper inside out - despite what Ben wanted (aaaggh forget him! is what Aleks said ;D) We printed black background onto the tracing paper but left the cool fonts that made up everyone's name (with their own individual fontstyle!) in white and ranges of yellow, so that the light from the lightbox will literally "light up" our names.
PRETTY COOL RIGHT??? THAT'S OUR MIDNIGHT BRAINSTORM!!~~~ XD XD XD XD XD
We owe it to each other for our great teamwork, and until this day, we're very pleased and proud with our collaboration - hence Alek's special request (these days, I kept getting special requests from the girls in class!!!) to have me in the exhibition, so that we can work together and come up with another kick-ass concept to blow the rest of the Truman people into the next horizon >DDDD
The photo in the poster is taken on the day of our degree presentation, after we finished it at the end and everyone was happily drinking (booze happily provided by Ben himself!).
The lightbox poster is as you see it - we wrapped the table with white paper, and do some torn effect at the edges of the space for the lightbox-poster to cover up some printing mistakes + make it look grungey cool at the same time! ^_______^
And there's my name on it! With the really cool fonts Aleks and I picked out at DaFont.com that can best represent us ^____^ Loved that gothic font, very very much XD (Anya shares the same fontstyle as me too!~)
After the private viewing of our Degree Show ends, we went to have a drink with Ben at the nearest local bar @ The Eight Bells near the Hatfield Station.
This time, at least, I didn't get that drunk. I only had one glass of cocktail ;)
Though the rest did - except Ben - BEN, he definitely can hold his alchohol - he's still sober after one bottle of rose wine by Qnqush - and Qnqush said it's a pretty strong wine! Because although she didn't drink, Aleks did and Aleks was on high/quite drunk the whole night after.
Special highlights in that bar outing!~:
1) Erika drank too much that night - and got VERY drunk - to the point she actually went up to Ben and started saying things from I Love You (FOR REAL!!!!) to "I'll miss you!!~~~ I'll Miss you so much when I go back to Japan!! YOU MUST COME AND VISIT ME!!!~" and she (get this) EVEN HUGGED HIM!! Tightly, a few times, and EVEN CRIED!! Thinking that she'll never see him again when she goes back! (I think deep down, she really liked him a lot...and so do the rest of us, actually.)
While the rest of us were super-surprised by her words/gestures (we NEVER EVER see Erika this drunk EVER!), Ben calmly handled the situation by reassuring her and consoling her that yes he'll visit her in Japan when he goes there in the future, etc. Only then did she finally stop crying. ^-^;;;
2) Ben now considers me the "crazy Malaysian Goth" when he saw what I wore that day - he actually commented on the bow thing on my neck. Then someone (Erika or Siew) told him about the back of my tailcoat (which has the chains), and Ben asked me to turn around. I did, and he went "OMG LAMMY WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WEARING" and I corrected him while being tipsy that "HEeey, this style is called the Gothic Lolita style!!" and he just laughed and said, "You're into all that rock and heavy metal and Gothic stuff - I THINK you're some sort of Malaysian Goth!!" And I said YEAAAAA MAAAAAN XD (I did say I was tipsy from the cocktail ;P)
3) Aleks was pretty drunk too. She started dancing IN BARE FEET outside the Hatfield Station when we're all done with the drinking - and Qnqush and I somehow can end up outside McDonalds at 12.15am to order (get this) ICE CREAM (McFlurries, actually), and then crash at the LRC to eat ice-cream (LOL the guards on the duty were amused to see us carry food into the LRC's cafe to eat at midnight LOL), before we finally walked Aleks home all the way to the other side of the uni - she was SO drunk even after all that meal, that she can hardly walked straight, and then she started DANCING on some fallen singage post (we had to pull her away to bring her back to her place safely and in one piece), before she finally reached her place at 1am.
And then having seen she's safely back there, it's time for Qnqush to tow me back, as the alcohol has taken effect on me, and made me so bleedin' dead sleepy she had to grab my arm and make sure THIS TIME I walked straight XD; We all managed to get back in one piece ^--^;
And then I'd woke up the next day at 10am-ish, with no hangover, but lots of my stuff pretty much everywhere XD;;;
Ohkay, that pretty much covers the Degree Show ^______^ One more entry to go! And you'll be amazed by THEIR work ;)
