I've been busy. But uselessly busy. Also talentedly useless at the same time.
First things first (need to get my mind straight!)
Accidents do happen. Wherever I go. EVEN in the UK. XD;;;
For God knows what reason (the One Up There has a really sadistic sense of humour...), I dropped stuff out of carelessness but usually I picked them up. Seems normal right?
Yesterday, I dropped my cardkey and ID at the entrance to my Hall - the door has this BIG metal bar thingy for wheelchair users to use when going in/out.
And after picking them up, out of unawareness/stupidity, I got up as usual-
-and my head KRAASHED against the bleedin' bar. Even though I KNOW it's ther. There's a loud THUNNK even. That's like what, how many Gs of Rising Force against a Solid Object - sure, they cancelled out each other, but the momentum of the returned force had me-
-seeing darkness and stars momentarily and almost lost my balance. (WUARGH!) But someone was approaching! Can't let 'em see me crouching on the floor, holding my aching head in agony. So I immediately got up, staggered outta the door, and went to open the mailbox to check if there's mail.
...1/2 hour later, when I'm back safe in ma hole, the dizziness came, I went to sleep-
-and woke up feeling...odd.
I would like to call it amnesia, but I'm half-aware of what happened later on, so I dunno what condition is this called. Takes me like what, half a day to get my wits AND myself back. I dunno what rubbish I might have spout in my un-Lammy state, but I hope the damage ain't serious.
And on top of that, two bloody b'galows had grown on my head. DX *rubs 2 knobby sores*
I've been better now though. Only I start to go "Tee-hee" after each reply I give to people. Which DEFINITELY sounds SO wrong, coming outta my mouth.
....uuuarrrgh, whoever's up there, PLEASE return my mind to my original state!
Rusty Illo Skillz ORZ
Halfway between weekly assignments, I've been working on a few side projects. One official and one unofficial (actually, more like building a side portfolio...)
The official one is some sort of a gig - it's open to all students of the Art&Design Faculty here, and the brief is to design a giant 2 x 3m (landscape) poster/mural for the soon-to-be-completed Student Forum. According to Ben, the wall for the poster is near the Student Bar and overlooks the Auditorium or something (he can NEVER give clear instructions!), but the poster's supposed to reflect the vibrant student community as well as the modern, upbeat interior of the Student Forum (interior spaces that I've known so far includes the lounge bar, cafeteria, and student restaurant)
The requirements? Free title, Or SO according to Ben. It can be anything - graphic, graffiti, photomontage (your own), etc., as long as it's your own work (like, don't rip somebody else's existing work and claim it as your own. Plagiarism is strictly taken seriously here.)
And having NOT done a compositional illustration ever since the last IlloFun class back at TOA (that's like, 4 years ago? Damn, 'so long!), it took me awhile to remember the basics of compositing. (Uwah, if WC finds out...I'm dead XD;;;)
And looking at the time-frame that I currently have left, I need to finish it within 2 days.
I've done the composition (highly inspired by the grand crazy potpourri of DMC's Future in my Hands, SkaPara, and Santana's Interplanetary Party!), and all that's left is the linework/inking. Shading WILL kill me (for last time, when it comes to pencil-shading, I go veeeeeerry sloooooow), so I planned to go graphic-style, kinda bordering the anime/manga look.
But I dunno if the UK people here can accept such styles :/
Yeah, a few of the classpeeps got Super-excited when I ter-draw them as chibi-fied people (they called it caricatures here though o.O;;;) out of boredom while manning the mini-exhibition at the local town centre (and I was the only IDIOT to go organize everything together with the Council people, since the class is stupidly HOPELESS and would rather stand and yak and disappear 2 hours later than help out DX), but that's just...a random sketch. Which Somehow found its way to some of their camera, and ended up on Facebook as their profile pic :/
Out of amusement (and gladness that people actually liked my work :D), I redrew the sketch, cleaned 'em up nicely in PS, and load it on FB for them to use.
But that's just the starting stage though. I dunno about the rest...
...I'll finish up the linework later, and probably post a preview here later on.
That's the official one.
The unofficial one, is kinda my side-quest.
This side quest, is called [Project: Mischief Magick]. There's a few reasons I wanna do it:
1) for our degree show, we needed to raise money to fund our printing/trip/space rental at London, where all the best of the best's gonna go display their works. The big guys are in, including the Uni of Brighton and Uni of Birmingham. Everything from fashion to textile to graphic to interior to applied arts will be shown to other people/the industry. It really IS a big gig.
Unfortunately, the lousy class's never done this thing before. And they dunno what to do.
Fortunately, I've gone through 2 lousy Graduation Campaigns back home (headed by the notorious E), so I sort of remember the basic process of doing things (which ain't pretty...mostly bad memory :/)
But I've learnt a lot of life lessons last term, and one of them is, Save Yourself before Saving Others.
So although Ben is real keen to have our works displayed, with no money coming in (and last years' senior's show was funded by UH but not this year for us since we've got waaay too many people), it'll be impossible to do it what with undedicated classpeople.
What's Your Plan then?
...although it seems like a long shot, and an impossible feat (what with my amateur illustration skills...-_-), I thought that, if I can do a series of works and sell 'em off, the profits off that (no matter how much), I'll use it as my contribution for the degree show.
My initial plan was to publish an illustrated book, [Mischief Magick], that tells a quirky story starring Zails and Eireann. But I know myself, and that I lacked the skills (design-wise and layout-wise) to make one.
The other plan is to sell it as an artbook - hopefully together with contribution from other sources/artists/DA-people/you guys, too. :) But the printing costs will put me in the red.
My last plan when all else fails (inspiration from KiDChan!) is to hold an art jam session, and try to sell as much character sketch/renders as possible. Sort of like doing commissions for people, but for a certain period. Special requests (that's complicated and takes time), I'll accept it as a proper commission and 'course, at a slightly higher rate.
The only setback to ALL of these plans, is my rusty (or rather, lack thereof) illo skillz. ORZ
Sure...I have the ideas. I know what I wanna draw in mind. But my drawing style is not as top-notched as those keng-chau people on DA (or anyone else with a proper Illo diploma for that matter - me, I'm a random-sketcher and doodle-drawer :/ Which explains my crap skills ORZ)
My lineart work is rough, to say the least. Sometimes the anatomy goes weird too.
MY PS-render skills have somewhat improved, but I always take too long to finish one work.
All this while (and back then), I learn the basics of line-art-ing and PS-rendering from
shirou_ohsakura. Which is GOOD, and I'm really really grateful for the skills imparted to me, Constance :)
But now, I want to put my character-designing skills to some good use.
...seems a long shot though.
Still, I've unleashed [Mischief Magick] already (one is up so far on DA). No turning back now.
Only I need to find ways to improve further. (I know my levels, and I know I'm not THERE yet -_-)
Of which, I'll welcome any suggestions. :)
Going back to the topic, this side-quest's supposed to help fund my degree show (partly) as well as sort of prepare it as a side-portfolio (for illustrative works).
And that poster gig, if there's a pot prize, why I'll also use it to fund the degree show.
...but for now, I'll finish that poster linework first. And I'll see where I can go from there.
...damn, sometimes I wished I had taken Illustration instead. It IS my true calling, now that I've known it.
