So it was that...one guy's birthday yesterday, yeah? I don't know him--

[And he never will, ironically.]

--but it got me thinking. There are a lot of people on this ship, and going back months and months on the...network? I'm going to assume that's the right word. Even going back months and months on the network, there isn't much about birthdays.

Maybe it's superficial in the face of everything people have gone through here, or being taken from home to begin with, but the easiest way to make a place home is to find some sense of normalcy. So, with that in mind, I'd like to make a log of everyone's birthdays, and assuming we're all still here when they roll around, I'll personally make sure you get a cupcake with a candle in it, or something appropriate.

I should probably ask how you celebrate birthdays where you're from, too. Or if you celebrate them at all...

[Pause. The Arbiter certainly didn't seem the type to celebrate much of anything in any way whatsoever, much less some way involving cake, but North has no way of knowing. Better to just leave it open and wait to find out before he does anything.]

Just to start it off, so nobody feels weird giving out their birthday or their age or anything, my birthday is April 23rd, I'm fifteen, and back home when someone has a birthday friends and family give the birthday person gifts. We also make--or buy--a cake and put the same number of candles in the cake as the years the person has been alive. It gets to be a fire hazard eventually, but it's a tradition.

...Oh! Oh, that's actually the human tradition for birthdays and it's mostly just where I'm from. In the facility, where Pets are made, birthday's aren't really celebrated, and a lot of owners don't throw parties for their Pets. It's different from place to place.

aging normally is for humans, ^ironhide, ^billy, ^keats arlend, ^ripa moramee, different worlds what, ^b, birthdays!, making himself useful, persona grata
