I just finished reading this book and with all Tanith Lee books I enjoyed it immensely. Only I'm confused by Vazkor spending most of his time playing the holy man and political manipulator. It seems like she wrote him to be as disdainful of the political process as his mother, yet he tends to go all out to turn things his way. Is she trying to foreshadow the incest? Give Vazkor a friend in the inept and ultimately weak Sorem? Or was she just get sidetracked and ended up writing an entirely different novel and only after everything goes to hell does she resume the story of Vazkor going to find his own mother.
Any thoughts? I love this book and I love the whole Birthgrave series (actually I thought Vazkor, Son of Vazkor was stronger than most think since that's the one where he really goes through the heroic journey from dope to human being) but I felt almost cheated by the whole Machiavellian novella in the middle.
