Wow. Is anyone else just really tired of the negativity surrounding IWTB?
I feel like the fandom has turned into a bunch of kids who ask Santa all year long to bring us a bike and then Christmas morning rolls around and GASP there's the bike we've wanted for so long. But dammit it's blue and we wanted a RED bike. So we sit in the corner and pout about our horrible blue bike instead of just getting our little butts on the bike and riding it around with a smile.
Now I'm not saying people can't dislike the film. If you dislike it, you dislike it. But people are now coming down on people who like it, and coming down on reviewers that say positive things about the movie, and just in general being Daddy Downer and Brother Bummer. (it's a line from "Beautiful Girls" google it :D) It's not people disliking the film that angers me, it's the bitching and whining about a film we waited 6 years for that angers me. Think about that. Six years and we finally got to see Mulder and Scully again. That in and of itself should make people just a little tiny bit gleefull. But I don't know, maybe it only makes people more angry lol
Why are people acting like they were somehow mislead? So people are disappointed the movie wasn't about aliens. But, hello CC said all along the movie was going to be a stand-alone, not involving the mythology. Yet, I still see so many people saying, why wasn't it about aliens? Because it wasn't, okay. And you knew it wasn't going to be, so if that's your big complaint then why did you even see the movie? Just so you could complain some more?
CC said it was going to be a personal story about faith and about Mulder and Scully's relationship. It was never going to be a big bang-up blow 'em up movie like FTF. So how can people be shocked when the movie turned out to be exactly what he said it was going to be?
And then there are all the people saying the x-file itself was dumb. It wasn't scary enough, it's wasn't paranormal enough, it wasn't fill-in-the-blank. Sorry, but I thought it was creepy as hell. Maybe not bone chilling terrifying like "Home", but still pretty god damn scary. CC kept saying they wanted it to be an x-file that could actually happen - a crime that someone might possibly commit. And I think he succeeded there. The whole serial killer locking women in a box thing seems pretty damn terrifying to me.
That leads me to a question: Are there really that many people out there that didn't like the movie? Or is it just a small number of people making an awful lot of noise. I post regularily with a group from another board, and everyone over there loved it. So I don't have a good idea of what the breakdown is from fans who liked it and fans who didn't.
It makes me sad because I feel like those involved with the movie (mostly Chris, Frank, Gillian and David) are going to be reading or hearing the negativity coming from fans, and I just don't want it to represent us fans as a whole. I want them to know, that as many people that are out there complaining about the film - there are those of us who loved the film. And I want them to know that we are grateful they made this film happen and they brought the XF world back to us one more time. They did not have to make this movie. They did not have to bring these characters back again. But they did. And they did it for us, the fans. And I think that's a pretty darn good reason to say, "thanks."
The whole movie felt like a giant "thank you" to us fans. From the pencils in the ceiling to the fish tank to CC holding his urn thingy - the movie was filled with goodies that only a Phile would be able to appreciate. And to top it all off, we even got shirtless Mulder :P What more could you ask for? (I know a bunch of you are saying "shirtless Scully" but it was PG-13 :P )
I think they took such a risk with this film in so many ways. First of all, the subject of the film itself - religion, faith, sexual abuse, these are all risky topics. Secondly, they took a risk releasing a small film during the summer, and finally they took a risk that we the fans would still be out there. To me, those were brave risks and I applaud them for taking them. And I'm paying them back for taking those risks by going to see this movie 10 times (ok, so I've only seen it 3 times so far but I'm on my way :D) Of course, maybe they should have released this in the fall and it would have done better financially but hindsight is 20/20. If it had made a buttload of money everyone would be calling them geniuses for releasing an anti-summer film in the summer.
I know you can't please everyone. But for God's sake I wish people would stop complaining long enough to say "thank you for making this film."
Most fandoms would give their right arm to have their characters brought back one last time. We're lucky. And as shippers - WOW are we lucky. I mean, our ship literally sailed off into paradise. Literally. When does that ever happen? Like - NEVER lol
I loved the film. I love them for making it. I love Mulder and Scully, and I hope to God if we are lucky enough to get an XF3 people will just appreciate the collosall love that Chris, David and Gillian must feel for these characters and for us fans to keep bringing Mulder and Scully back to us.
So this was a long and sort of bitter post, and I've probably pissed someone off. But I pretty much do that every day. :P
