obama is the our generations kennedy

last night
it felt like new years eve
i felt chills on bishop street
the excitement in the air
the community coming out to be together
felt like we were going to the town square

running across friends
we are america
we are able to come together to change not just our own lives
but a nation

i went to my friends house off coombs creek
the one that has hosted countless
parties
my friends that i call family
gay, straight, white, latino, hetero
surrounding me
and we all counted down 16 seconds before 10
and watched together as cnn or msnbc flashed the news
we all yelled as loud as we could
champagne was passed around
we watched mccains speech with as much quiet as we could
i thought it was nicely done

then we waited and waited for our new president elect to come out
and speak to his nation

we watched obama come out with his family
as they walked out proudly
i started to cry
this is our new first family
as a girl
that has suffered in childhood
the hatred of racism
that lingers int he minds of ignorant people still
i say
it's not their fault they are ignorant
of what it means to be a person of color in america
ignorant as in they have not seen, felt, or known what it feels like
and when exposed to it
when taught of it, their outlook could change
anyway
as our new first family walked out
i cried
looking at
how beautiful
how wonderful
that people who had to struggle so hard against hate
are now role models for so many of us

to be an american
is to be proud of accomplishments
proud to stand up for what you believe in
and be different
stand up and know your self

so beautiful so beautiful so beautiful
i am crying still as i write

whoever did the choreography for the night
did it just right

obama stood there alone
to deliver an inspired and inspirational message

then, to see biden walk out
to join him

to see our new leaders together and the respect they displayed to each other

then
the families again

we are a nation of families
we need each other
and you saw the support group that took them there
through the hard times

then they all left
leaving him and his wife
waiting for him almost by the wings

excellent.

i woke up, and told myself
today
i will get a job.

today
i got a job.
