2012: a summary

Wow. I last updated in January. I'm terrible. The icing on my guilt-cake comes courtesy of the fact that I've got a lifetime account here. These days I'm most active over at Twitter - https://twitter.com/taniawalker

If I don't make a short record of this year I'll regret it in years to come, though, so here goes.

January: I took an entire month ( Read more... )

If you want a good burger, there are two places I'd particularly recommend: Schwartz Brothers in Bath (and perhaps Bristol as well), and MOS Burger in Singapore (and a few other East Asian countries). The former offer particularly tasty burgers, and interesting combinations; MOS, on the other paw, also offer some different options, like burgers with rice replacing the bread, somehow formed into rice patties that are nonetheless perfectly stable and holdable. Table service is rather a civilised change, too. ^_^

[Gender Studies] helps me question my standard lens for looking at the world. I find once I learned to look afresh at the gender lens I took for granted, it was easier to see the world with fresh eyes across a number of other areas.

Mmm, interesting points! Perhaps something I ought to take a closer look at.

We sold our Kombi van, Watson, to a group of Swedish backpackers.

Is this the opening scene to an indie film?

bought one of my short stories for publication in their February 2013 issue

Oh, cool beans! Does seem to've been quite a good year for some folks to get their writing in motion; I dare say jakebe would concur, for one.

those long bus journeys through the beautiful, pastoral Huon Valley used to give me a lot of thinking time

Indeed, that kind of trade-off has definite points either side. I had quite a long commute (by far the longest I've known personally) in San Diego, from University City up to Carlsbad, across two bus routes. But.. oh, those mornings, with much of the ride going through the coastal towns, often right by the beaches, with surfers routinely coming on and off with their boards.. there are worse ways to start a work day. ^_^

The tablet looks rather nifty! It's rather unfortunate tablets of that kind never took off at the time, but I suppose that leads to them being available now for rather less than new. If I do get around to kickstarting my artwork (dormant for way too long), I'm tempted by one of Yiynova's Cintiq-alikes - they seem like genuine Cintiq competitors in every way, but around ¼ the price, with the 19" model weighing in at US$499.

Hairy Mollet

Is that something you're hoping to complete the illustrations for this year? I love the look of the examples you've offered. Easily up to commercial publishing standard, though I'm no editor.

Mt Wellington's endless track offerings

Ahh, now there's something I could go for. ^_^ At the previous place, I took full advantage of the wonderfully extensive network of footpaths, bridleways, and cycle paths within reach outside town. Less so at the moment, with the short days and rather frustratingly uniformly drab weather, but here too, there are quite a few I can look forward to exploring and revisiting.

a new place at Sandy Bay, even closer to work, and only a couple of minutes walk from the beach

Oh, wow. Okay, that worked out. =:D

We had to start over with furniture when we moved to Tassie and there's been quite a lot of chipboard involved.

Easy to imagine how that would be - I've moved dozens of times, a few times intercontinentally. Consequently, I don't have any furniture. (I did once have a freebie waterbed, with rather a cool frame, but of course, had to abandon that)

Joe and I flew to Melbourne and sprung a ninja-wedding

Brilliant. =:D And you look quite dashing in your beard. ^_^

I'm so pleased you were the one to find Gravy. That sounds like such a tough life you rescued them from, and to know they're now thriving.. well, it goes without saying that makes me happy. If you post here again soon, do please drop word of their goings-on.
