Summary: Al is flesh again, Ed is retired, Winry's in love and Roy is in jail, and the Army wants to use all of them, willing or not, for a despicable purpose.
Why: I first read this story just about a year ago, but I was caught up in preparations for studying abroad and didn't get around to reccing it before I left. So it's sat in my bookmarks for the past year, waiting for me to figure out something to say to do this story the justice it so richly deserves. Two days ago, I started re-reading the story, needing to refresh my memory. At 1 this morning, I looked up to discover that time had completely escaped me. On the bright side, I was finished with my second reading of "Pawns."
The great thing about this story is the plot. It's an AU which takes place in an indeterminate future that's described in the summary above. velvet_mace takes that setting, and creates a highly absorbing story that has held me spellbound both times I've read it. Velvet Mace is a spectacular storyteller. Not to mention she creates interesting original characters and does a wonderful job of characterizating the rest of the characters. Oh, and did I mention that she's a plot whiz? Seriously, even if you haven't seen all of Full Metal Alchemist (I sure haven't!), that's ok. This AU deals very little with the canon plotline of of FMA, and I don't think I had a single thing spoiled for me by it, so don't let spoiler considerations hold you back at all. ^^
