So, my entry from last weekend got so long that I never got a chance to talk about what I've been watching. I've actually been watching a lot! In no particular order:
The latest Haikyuu! Which is sooo good. The tension of the last two episodes has been insane! I literally hunched on the couch like a gargoyle with the X-Box controller in a deathgrip in my hands for this past episode. I just couldn't relax. I've realized that Tsukiyama has become one of my favorite characters during this latest season. Seeing his journey toward being someone who cares about volleyball is absolutely one of the highlights of the series for me. Also, just wanted to note that Nishinoya was FANTASTIC this past episode. FANTASTIC.
Yuri on Ice!! So much love! I'm not sure if I get more worked up for this one or Haikyuu. Too close to call? This latest episode was lovely, particularly the very end. I pretty legitimately thought that Yuri and Victor were going to kiss at one point. But the things they said! I think that's even better than kissing! Ugh, this series is going to kill me with the explosion of love that it creates in me.
All Out! I'm starting to enjoy this a lot more. I'm getting really fond of Gion, and things have very much become more interesting now that they have an actual coach. I hope that some of the other characters get to come out and show themselves more. I know Gion and Iwashimizu because they're basically the mains, and Ebumi is obnoxious enough to know him. Other than that, the only other player's name that I know is the captain, Sekizan, so I really hope that everyone else gets fleshed out.
Days. I'm a bit behind on this, and it's probably my least favorite at the moment. It's cute enough, but I think it's a bit too realistic? It's OK, but the pacing is strange at times. I do like it, but it's definitely taking a backseat to everything else.
I also started watching Magical Girl Raising Project after reading in the synopsis that it's similar to Madoka Magica. Which is very true, and if you liked Madoka, I really recommend this one. Basically, a bunch of people are given the ability to become magical girls through a cellphone game. It starts out very sweet and fun, and then it's announced that there are too many magical girls in this particular town, and their number needs to be cut in half. So a competition starts - whoever collects the least number of magical candies in a week is no longer a magical girl. And from there it gets quite dark, with political machinations, theft, betrayal, battle, and characters dying. I think it's pretty fantastic, to be honest. If you like dark subversions of the magical girl trope, I recommend you check it out.
I've also been idly rewatching Log Horizon and The Wallflower/Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge. I love Log Horizon sooo much, so it's been kind of a comfort watch. I watched most of The Wallflower back around the time that it was coming out, but I never watched the last few episodes, so that's my goal. It crack-tastic shoujo goodness. Love it!
In non-anime watchings, I continue to keep up on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, Lucifer, and Conviction. I'm kind of sad to find out that Conviction is not going past 13 episodes, since I've been really enjoying it. I love that kind of law/crime drama, and the main character reminds me very strongly of House, which is a character archetype that I enjoy. Goes to show that my tastes are just not very mainstream, I guess.
I've actually been reading a bunch this week too. I've decided that I'm going to open up the month of December and allow myself to read whatever I want this month. Which basically means I'm going to read off my Kindle for the month. ;) I hadn't originally intended to do this, but I got about 40% through Space Hostages by Sophia MacDougall and just didn't want to stop. So I didn't. (For the record, it was totally worth it.) And since that was my work book, I picked up Half-Off Ragnarok by Seanan McGuire for work, and ended up not wanting to stop that one either. At which point I decided to just let myself read whatever this month. I've been very focused on my goals this year - I've read a lot of books from my physical bookshelves, and I made pretty awesome progress on
the list that I made at the beginning of the year - so I guess it's time to give myself some freedom.
Although I've been really successful with the list, I don't think I want to make a list for the upcoming year. I think I'd rather continue to focus on reading my bookshelves and let myself choose what I want to off of them. I do think I'll pick out some things to put some emphasis on, but not much. Mostly, I'm thinking that I want to get a good start on The Dark Tower series, what with all the adaptations coming up. J is a big fan, so I know I'll have to see them all, and I'd like to hit the books first.
Unofficially, I have some books that will end some series that I've been reading for a long time, so I'd like to emphasis them. The Wheel of Time, The Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the original Kushiel trilogy...yeah, I need to read those and get them off my to-read list.
Anyway, I finished up Half-Off Ragnarok this morning and enjoyed it very much. I really find the incryptids fascinating, so I tend to fly through these. My next book was between Morning Star by Pierce Brown, Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie, and The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison, so I read a tiny bit of each and went with The Goblin Emperor. I'm loving it! I'm about 17% in, I think, and it's just...I love Maia so much. I went on Goodreads to see if there were any other books by the author, and discovered that it's a pen name for Sarah Monette, who I've heard of but haven't read anything by, so I guess she's going to get moved up my list!
