Top 5 Wednesday: Recent additions to my wishlist

Jul 23, 2016 11:24

I think I mentioned in one of my previous posts that I've started watching quite a bit of Booktube lately, and one of the things that I really like is the Top 5 Wednesday videos. Basically, there is a weekly topic, and you choose your top 5 books that fit into that category. I'd like to post here more, and I'd like to talk about books more, so I'm going to try doing this! It will probably not be on Wednesdays, but rather whenever I get around to it during the week.

This week's topic is recent additions to your wishlist. I'm going to look at this two different ways. First, I'm just going to talk about the last five books that I added to my to-read list on Goodreads, and then I'm going to talk about which 5 books I'm probably going to read next. Because let's face it. My to-read list has pretty much no bearing on what I actually read. :)

Last 5 books I added to my to-read list:

1) Nailbiter Vol. 1: There Will be Blood by Joshua Williamson

This graphic novel focuses on a town in Oregon that has been the birthplace of a large number of serial killers, and the people who are investigating why that is. Chelsea from The Outlaw Reader talked about this one. It sounds fun! Also, I thought it could be a fun experiment. I really like TV shows that focus on the police and mysteries, etc., but I don't really care for mystery novels. Maybe a graphic novel will be a good mix of the two?

2) The Sunlight Pilgrims by Jenni Fagan

Paul at Common Touch of Fantasy does a weekly video about the new releases for the week, and I found this one there. I have previously read Panopticon by Jenni Fagan, which is wildly out of genre for me, but which I really enjoyed. I think she has a great gift for language and character, so I thought this one might be fun to give a try. It's set in Scotland, and is a near-future story about an ice age falling over the world.

3) Fool's Gold by Jon Hollins

Another new release. Basically, dragons rule the world, and a band of thieves decides to steal from them. It sounds like a mishmash of fantasy stereotypes, but it has some very good preliminary reviews. And let's face it. I love dragons. I love thieves. Based on those two things alone, I think this could be a lot of fun for me.

4) Soon I Will be Invincible by Austin Grossman

This one's been out for ages so I won't summarize, but I just recently decided that I'd like to check it out someday. I'm currently listening to The Mad Scientist's Guide to World Domination, which is an anthology of short fiction. Austin Grossman had the first story in it, which I really enjoyed. So, this seems like an obvious choice to pick up in the future.

5) Consciousness and the Social Brain by Michael Graziano

My attention was initially drawn to this book because I know someone in real life who shares the author's name. So, I clicked on it. And it's that brand of psychology nonfiction that the former psych major in me loves, so I added it to the list. As the title indicates, it addresses the question of consciousness: what it is, how it develops, etc.

5 Books I will probably actually read next

1) King of Sword and Sky by C. L. Wilson

The third book in the Tairen Soul series, a romantic fantasy with an immortal Fey Prince and a spunky human girl. I've really enjoyed the first two books in the series, and I own the entire series, so it's one of the things that I put on my reading goal list for the year.

2) The Price of Valour by Django Wexler

The third book in his Shadow Campaigns series. I bought it pretty much when it came out, and have been holding onto it, which is a bad habit of mine. I think it's about time to read it. I've absolutely loved the first two books in the series, so my hopes are very high for this one!

3) Masques by Patricia Briggs

I love Patricia Briggs' urban fantasy, but I haven't read a lot of her older stuff, even though I own a good portion of it. Plus, most of her books are relatively slim, which will probably be nice between the two bigger books I have planned.

4) Renegade's Magic by Robin Hobb

Final book in the Soldier Son trilogy that I'm currently reading and loving! I'm a bit over midway through the second book, and I'm still really enjoying the series a ton. I loved Robin Hobb as a teen, but I think I may adore her as an adult.

5) Queen of Song and Souls by C. L. Wilson

Not sure if I'll actually do this, but it's the 4th book in the Tairen Soul series. I know I'll want something lighter after Renegade's Magic, and I definitely want this series finished this year, so it would be a good choice on my part to keep up the momentum. I don't usually plan this far ahead, though, so it's hard to say if the mood will be right. ;)
