Puddy

A little after 3 pm today, Lucy, our "Puddy dog", left our lives. She went really peacefully.

I got her when I was four years old. She was my first dog and a dear companion of mine. I've had that dog in my life for almost two decades. It's crazy to think about it like that, but I don't have very many memories of a time before she came into my life.

Puddy was a rescue dog, given to us by my aunt Lainey. She was very timid, but warmed up to our family over time. We believe Puddy was a mix between Poodle and Pomeranian. While Poodles are generally known for their smarts, Lucy must have gotten the Pomeranian's brain because she was never known for her brightness. But what she lacked in brains, she made up for tenfold in heart. I've never known a more loving dog, who would rather be rewarded in being petted than getting treats.

At the end, her kidneys were failing her and she quickly weakened. We kept her as comfortable as we could for almost a week, but we were only prolonging the inevitable. We were able to get a vet to come to our house today. She fell into a deep sleep while we were petting her head and she was lying in her favorite bed.

I'm sure she was grateful for all the love and attention and petting she received from everyone she knew. Our family likes to assign backstories to our dogs, and Lucy was our Southern Belle. She was our Lulabelle, and we always joked that she was late to the cotillion and that her beau was waiting for her. She's finally made it to the cotillion and she couldn't be happier.

These were taken eight years ago, when Lucy was only 10. This is how I'll remember her most fondly.
Love you, Puddy.
