I saw the Avengers movie, so I can read livejournal again.
I don't have thinky thoughts on it just yet, beyond kind of admiring its construction--I mean, mostly I feel like I got hit between the eyes with a Mjollnir made of Movie--but I do have a few favorites/questions/things probably everyone else has already mulled over:
- I would watch the shit out of a Natasha movie, especially if it featured Hawkeye. In general I always want more Hawkeye, even though I realize that to most people he's probably superfluous.
- Add me to the list of people who never liked Hulk in anything who loved this version. Especially because of the concept of Banner slowly immunizing himself against his own rage by exposing himself to the worst humanity has to offer. Brilliant and understated, especially for Joss Whedon...
- Who mostly kept his finger off the Obvious Dialogue Is Obvious button, which I appreciated. I like a big loud ridiculous action movie that at least trusts its audience to see the payoffs of character setup. He also managed to give each character enough of an implied mini-arc and an individual motivation that they didn't feel too chess-piecey.
- I don't feel the Loki love. He was too petulant and his plan was too dumb. He was most effective when just witnessing things and smiling. (Good use of character design in the interaction between him and Tony, by the way.)
- If I saw the movie again, I'd probably find some of the special effects annoying--I was a little overwhelmed and very absorbed and even still there were bits that looked a little too false for my taste - but that's what you get when you have fourteen visual effects companies in the closing titles.
- More fighting in dark woods! More Banner and Stark talking SCIENCE BUSINESS! More NATASHA AND HAWKEYE OKAY EVEN IF IT'S JUST FOR ME.
So yeah. It was good. Someone want to write backstory fic with me?
