There were only ten minutes left of the year and Kurt and Blaine’s New Year’s Eve party was in full swing. All of their closest friends in New York were there and Burt, Carole, Cooper, and even some of the glee club had managed to make the trip to New York for the occasion. With all the fairy lights hanging up, the glittery dresses and the glasses of champagne sparkling in everyone’s hands, the apartment seemed to have a warm, golden glow about it and although it was a little cramped it was perfect; they were surrounded by everyone they loved.

Festive music played loudly throughout the house and the drinks were flowing. Everyone was in high spirits; everyone except from Kurt, that is. He watched enviously as all of his carefree guests sang, danced, laughed and chatted with one another while he struggled to keep his nervous heartbeat under control. As he wiped his sweaty palms hard on his jeans, he inconspicuously patted his pocket just to reassure himself that the little velvet box was still there where it should be.

His dad smiled broadly at him from where he was standing with Rachel and Finn and tapped the watch on his wrist. To everyone else in the room it just looked as though he was excited for the New Year, but only a select few guests knew that was not the case. When he and Blaine had gone back to Ohio for Christmas he’d quietly told his father that he was planning on proposing to Blaine on New Year’s Eve and he had been ecstatic.

“Kurt, I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I am for you,” he’d said as he gripped him tightly in his arms. “Remember back when you’d worried about how you’d never get to hold hands or slow dance with someone who loved you? Now you’ve got it all, you’re gonna be getting married!”

His eyes prickled at the memory; his dad’s reaction had been even better than he’d hoped it would be. After that he’d felt so light and full of joy that on Boxing Day he’d told Blaine he was going sale shopping and drove to Blaine’s parent’s house to ask their permission to marry their son and he hadn’t even been frightened of their reactions.

Blaine’s mother had cried and hugged him tight and told him she was sorry that she and Blaine’s father wouldn’t be able to make it to the engagement. Later, as she’d excitedly discussed wedding ideas with him, he’d really looked at her for the first time and realised how beautiful she was and how much she looked like Blaine when she smiled. He hoped that when he and Blaine had children of their own and if they decided to go the surrogate route that Blaine would be the biological father and that their baby would inherit Blaine and his mum’s silky, dark curls.

His father was less enthusiastic but that was to be expected; although he was never nasty about it, he had never really gotten to grips with Blaine’s sexuality. When Kurt had asked them if he could marry their son, his eyes had widened for a second before a small smile graced his features and he told Kurt he appreciated that he had taken the time to get their permission.

Then he surprised Kurt by shaking his hands and telling him sincerely, “I’m glad it’s going to be you. You’re very important to him.”

And Kurt had hugged him, not even caring whether Mr. Anderson was okay with it or not, because he was just that happy.

Probably his favourite part of that day was Cooper, who had come home for Christmas, bursting through the door, sweeping Kurt into his arms and spinning him around shouting, “I WAS EVESDROPPING, I HEARD IT ALL.”

Then, inappropriate as ever, he kissed Kurt hard on the mouth and yelled, “I’M GETTING A NEW BROTHER!”

After warning Cooper profusely that he was not to tell Blaine about what he was planning, Kurt left the Anderson household and went back to his dad and Carole’s where Blaine was in the kitchen cooking with Carole, absolutely oblivious that anything was going on.

He’d been so excited then that nerves hadn’t managed to penetrate his feelings of love and joy. He just kept picturing the look of surprise that he wanted to appear on Blaine’s face and hadn’t even considered that anything could go wrong or that Blaine could say no.

Now though, as he stood in a silent panic, it was all he could think of. He could hear his heartbeat pounding heavily in his ears and as he watched the hands on the clock creep closer to midnight, doubt and fear began to creep into his mind. What if Blaine said no? Or didn’t want to be proposed to in front of other people? Was this the wrong decision to make? How could he know for sure that Blaine was the person he was supposed to spend his life with?

He was close to just forgetting about the whole engagement or passing out when Blaine appeared by his side, soft smile on his perfect face and two champagne flutes in his hands. Every dark thought was chased from Kurt’s mind by a light that was just his pure, unconditional and unwavering love for the man in front of him. Blaine was his soul mate, he was his family and Kurt wanted to make that official.

“Only a minute left until the New Year,” Blaine murmured, nuzzling Kurt’s cheek.

Kurt kissed Blaine on the lips and began to lead him into the middle of the room, downed the flute of champagne that Blaine had given him in one go and made eye contact with his father who began to move closer to them. Except Kurt and his dad, only Carole and Cooper knew about what was going to happen and each of them had been instructed to make sure everyone was in the living room for the New Year’s countdown so that they wouldn’t miss the proposal.

Burt began the countdown from twenty seconds and Kurt took one last shaky breath before grasping Blaine’s hand and sinking down onto one knee. Everyone’s counting began to taper off around fifteen seconds as they realised that something was going on and he couldn’t be certain but Kurt was sure that he heard Rachel gasp.

He looked up at Blaine who was looking down at him with huge, shocked, watery eyes and he began speaking.

“Blaine, you are the most important person in my life. You are not just the love of my life; you’re also my first love and my best friend and that’s how I know that you’re it for me, my be all and end all,” his vision was becoming blurry with unshed tears and his voice was cracking but he just swallowed hard and continued. “Because in all of those cheesy books and movies they all say the same thing: that you never get over your first love and that your best friend is for life.”

“Kurt,” Blaine choked out, one solitary tear spilling over.

Kurt squeezed his hand and kept speaking, “I still get that annoying fluttery feeling in my stomach when I look at you, you still make me laugh and I still miss you when you’re not with me, even if you’re only at work. I want to come home to you every day for the rest of my life. I want to be your home because you are mine. I love you so much, Blaine. Will you do me the honour of becoming my husband?”

He reached into his pocket with trembling hands and pulled out the little black box and popped it open to reveal a thick titanium band with three diamonds in the front of it.

Blaine gasped and dropped down to his knees in front of Kurt and grabbed his face between his hands.

“Yes, yes, yes, yes,” he murmured tearfully, punctuating each ‘yes’ with a kiss to Kurt’s face. “I love you so, so much.”

The apartment erupted into cheers and applause while Kurt slid the ring onto Blaine’s finger and from somewhere to their right he heard Cooper shout, “Happy New Year, everyone and Happy New Brother to me!”

klaine, glee, new year's eve
