Who Reads SPAM?

More importantly, who actually believes these spam ads and purchases the products?
Who would be so gullible given the negative and very high profile publicity that spam mail has gotten over the years? I always figured that the answer was: no one. Reading a trade magazine this morning I read about a company that is trying a new form of spamming to see if they can increase their sales. It talked about how successful they've been with traditional spam and how they are looking to expand. As it turns out, spam actually seems to work as a platform for sales! These companies have to be making sales to continue to use this marketing tool.

So my question to the world is...who reads this spam and purchases the products?
What kind of personality or mindset overlooks the clearly suspicious nature of these emails and trusts their senders?
