Chapter 3

It was 4am when cloud’s phone rang. Muttering a number of colourful curses in the 3 languages that he knew under his breath, Cloud rolled out of his bed and promptly fell on the floor. Cursing again Cloud groped with sleep bleared eyes for his phone, while at the same time wondering who had changed the ringtone to the ‘Mission impossible’ theme tune. ‘Zack probably changed it,’ He had only known him for a few days yet the black haired man seemed to continuously get under his skin. He was friendly and cheerful but at the same time seemed to take enjoyment from annoying Cloud whenever he could. Well at least he hadn’t pranked him yet, Jessie had been the latest victim and it was safe to say that the orange hair dye would not come out very quickly.

Eyes still half shut Cloud blindly fumbled around for his uniform while trying to remember where he had put it the night before. After managing to find the folded uniform on the chair he now had the task of putting it on. The many buttons seemed too complicated for his sleep befuddled mind and he spent at least a minute of hopping trying to get into a trouser leg. After a long list of swear words, a few buttons done in the wrong holes, a cup of coffee and three tries at trying to tie the black shoe laces on his boots; Cloud was ready to go. He was lucky that he had been able to use a company car to drive home as few buses ran at 4am in the morning, or so he thought. Despite the early hour Midgar truly seemed to never sleep, the menacing orange glow kept away the true night and left the city in perpetual twilight. The citizens also reflected this state, depressed and morbid the streets had dirty cars waiting at traffic lights and hunched figures running the streets. When he arrived at the police station it was much the same as any other building, tall, oppressive, built of sharp angles and black shadows. Getting out of the car and walking towards the front door of the building Cloud wondered if a building of supposed justice was meant to look so dark, it looked... corrupted. ‘Much like the higher-ups of the police force itself, they’ll cover up an aristocratic murder for money’ at this time in the morning Cloud had no room for happy thoughts.

“Cloud! My fluffy haired partner, it’s brilliant to see you looking so chirpy this morning!” Obviously this was not the case for his violet eyed annoyance, he was not a partner he was an annoyance. (A.N: Admittedly a lovable one though)

Immediately Cloud turned on his heel and started towards the side door, anything to avoid the headache a little longer.

“Hey! Wait Cloud! Where are you going?” Zack was running after him waving his arms.

“To work, this way has less... obstacles,” he had reached the door and was now fumbling for his key.

Zack had caught up and had draped an arm over Cloud’s shoulder he leaned over Cloud and inserted his own key into the lock. Opening the door he bowed low as if expecting a king to come through.

“Welcome your royal fluffiness, I am forever in awe of your eternally spiky hair,” Cloud was doing his best impression of a tomato and he could feel the blush begin to creep down his neck as well. He swapped Zack on the head as he walked passed him.

“Stop it idiot, the only reason we would be called out at this hour is because of work so be serious,” immediately the playful glint in Zack’s eye went out. Cloud was startled by the grim look that overtook his face, having only seen the man smile beforehand. It made him uneasy.

“Yeah, to call us out now it must be some real nasty shit,” They had arrived at the office and while Cloud knocked Zack clenched his fists and looked off to the side, “Were the homicide pair too.”

Upon entering the office a ragged Chief Highwind shoved a file at them and told them to ‘get their goddamned arses into a police car and go to the fucking crime scene’ to which they promptly obeyed. The car journey was tense and awkward. Zack was impatiently tapping his fingers against the steering wheel while staring at the road as if it was about to spontaneously combust. Cloud’s leg was jittering up and down while he read the folder that had been thrown at his face. The case did not look like one that would be full of sparkly bunnies and fluffy tiaras. The victium was a young girl named Marie-Jane Newman, she was smiling at the camera, holding a cuddly toy.

“Too young,” Zack growled and gripped the wheel tighter, “she was too young to have to suffer this kind of thing,”

“No one should have to die like this, look; rape, beaten, stabbed. I think the girl welcomed death at the end.” Cloud’s face was pale.

“Who’s the suspect?”

“It says here that the ‘pattern of death’ matches someone called ‘The second ripper’. Who is that?” Cloud had turned to face Zack with a questioning look, Zack just continued staring at the road in front of him.

“A sick fuck who models himself after the infamous ‘Jack the Ripper’ he cuts his victims open and usually removes an organ, it seems this time he removed the kidney’s.” Zack’s knuckles were white as they gripped the wheel. Cloud was uncomfortable, he hadn’t known Zack for long but already he was uncomfortable with this serious Zack. Zack struck him as the person who is meant to smile, to go through life annoying all those he came across. Cloud turned round to face the window. Midgar was dark, oppressive and full of senseless crime, he didn’t like it.

Sephiroth walked out of the shower, water dripping down his toned chest and legs as he reached over for one of the towels on the rack. After collecting his bathrobe from the door and wrapping another towel around his hair he stepped out of the bathroom. After walking through his bedroom he picked up the clothes Vincent laid out earlier. Upon his way ou he reached for his cane.

“I will be out for a while Vincent, if I need you to collect me I shall call for you.” The reply ‘yes master’ echoed behind him as he shut the door. He knew where ‘the ripper’ had been planning to butcher his victim and wished to see if he had gotten any better when it came to cleanly disposing of the evidence. It was always good to check on other killers’ mistakes. There also may be that new officer Vincent had informed him on. Sephiroth hoped he was pleasing to the eye, it would make Midgar more interesting if he had a new toy to play with.

With long graceful strides he set out towards the park and subsequently the alley. He always knew what was going on in Midgar, and ‘the ripper’ had a certain method when it came to choosing his sites. The beggars and street children scuttled to the shadows as he walked by, they knew that nothing good came of attracting this man’s attention. He was the most dangerous kind.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They arrived at an area of taped off alleyway, the yellow tape contrasted against the grimy walls. The ally was dark and there were already forensic detectives taking samples and snapping photos. The girl had not been moved and was lying in a pool of her own blood, her sightless eyes stared up at the grey sky as if asking it ‘why her’. Her face was a mask of pain and there were tear streaks running down from her glassy eyes. Her toy was in an equally sorry state with the arm ripped and the stuffing lying around, both owner and toy bled dry. The toy had been thrown off to the side, presumably by the murderer, the sight hurt Cloud and at first he had to turn away from the sight before he could regain his composure. Approaching the scene the pair was greeted by a forensic officer, he said that now that they had arrived a few more photos would be taken and then they would remove the body for testing. This girl would not be allowed to rest for a while till they had gotten what they needed off her.

“He was carless this time, left his knife and his DNA. I think he could have been hyped up on drugs or just eager.” One of the forensics was putting the knife in a plastic bag.

“No chance, the knife matches the stab wounds of other victims and also she matches up to other victims as well, it is likely that he was simply pumped up on drugs and made mistakes,” Zack was looking at the knife, comparing it to some sheets of paper he had gotten from the folder.

The information gathering, evidence collecting and tidying took until 7:30 am by this time Cloud had headed to a nearby park to get a cup of coffee. He sat down at the bench and took of his hat while running his hand through his unruly spikes. Cloud then proceeded to take off his tie and undo the first two buttons of his shirt. It strangled him more than he would like and he did not need to be wearing perfect uniform if Zack was anything to go by. He placed down his coffee cup next to him as he leaned over, rubbing his temples.

“Is something the matter?”

Startled Cloud’s neck snapped up and he abruptly froze. Greengreengreeneyes. Framed by silver hair and a beautiful face. Cloud couldn’t breath, he forgot he needed to. All he could do is blink.

“May I sit,” A gloved hand gestured towards the side that was not occupied with a coffee cup. Cloud could only nod.

As the man slid into the seat next to him cloud took the time to snap out of his stupor and observe the gentleman sitting next to him. He was a gentleman, that much was obvious, with smart clothes, a fashionable cane and quality fabrics. He carried an air of aristocracy and looked at the world with cold eyes that betrayed nothing of what he was thinking.

Sephiroth smiled as he surveyed the man (or was it a boy) next to him. He had blond hair that spiked in apparent disarray and wide blue eyes, his skin was pale and Sephiroth’s eye could pick out many features that told him that the boy was from out of town. He lacked the Midgar stench that attached itself to those who came from the city. His top two buttons were open and displaying a frail collarbone to the older man. ‘Truly exquisite’ Sephiroth resisted the temptation to lick his lips, his mind was already plotting how to gain the individual. This newest addition to the city excited his tastes.

“You look tired, did something happen? I notice you are an officer. Would I be so bold to inquire about what is bothering you?” A silver eyebrow raised and Cloud was under the distinct impression he was in the presence of a predator, a dangerous predator that had its sights set on him. The man’s voice purred and seemed to slither into his mind. He was torn between a sudden urge to flee and the strange desire to offer himself to the man.

“You should be careful, the murderer known as the Ripper killed a young girl near here,” He raised his eyes (when had he lowered them?) to meet the green ones above him. His tongue wet his lips as he continued, “He struck earlier this morning.”

The other eyebrow raised, “Your concern is gratefully noted,” ‘and unbelievably adorable, to think that I could be harmed by one such as ‘the ripper’’ Sephiroth racked his eyes up and down the blonde’s figure once again, “May I have the name of such a dedicated officer,” ‘So I can find your residence and subsequently remove you from it, and into my own’

“Uuuhh... Cloud, Cloud Strife, homicide detective,” Cloud offered his hand to the stranger.

Sephiroth took the offered hand and brought it to his lips, smiling against the hand as he caught Cloud’s intake of breath and watched the red blush race across Clouds face and down his neck. He held the blue eyes trapped within his own green pair before lowering the hand and smoothly sliding to his feet.

“I am Sephiroth, it was good meeting you, Cloud,” He caressed the name with his tongue causing Cloud’s blush to deepen. With that he was gone leaving Cloud breathless and blushing as he tried to remember how to get air into his lungs.

“CLOUD! Break’s over buddy,” Zack was running over when he noticed Cloud’s flustered state, “What’s up feather head?” he cocked his head looking much like an inquisitive puppy.

“A man called Sephiroth was here, he kissed my hand,” Cloud seemed to be in shock as he looked at his knuckles, still feeling the sensation of the man’s lips pressed against them.

Zack’s eyes narrowed ‘Sephiroth, what is he doing here he has no buisiness here’, “Well come on little dude, breaks over.”

“I’M NOT LITTLE!” Cloud jumped up and started striding towards the site.

Zack grinned and ruffled Clouds hair, “Yes you are, I can see your crown from here and am proud to say you are a natural blond, does that mean you’re an airhead too?” He laughed as Cloud tried to hit him and ran ahead. Cloud growled as he tried to run after Zack, just as he was leaving he turned to face the bench once again. Pressing his knuckles to his lips he blushed once again before starting after his black haired partner. A pair of green eyes watched him as he left, plotting on how to gain the blond as his own.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yayy! Cloud has caught our silver-haired aristocrat's eye, and what pretty eyes they are *sigh*. So while Sephiroth is plotting on how to get Cloud into his bed grasp, Zack is wondering what sephiroth is planning and Cloud is just simply confused and very much attracted to a pair of green eyes. I wonder what Reno will think of the Chocobo's meeting with the General. Speaking of such, do you think I should put Chocobos into the AU. Cos I am sure Zack would have fun with Cloud's resembalance to them.
