I’m The Juggernaut, Bitch!

I just saw the latest X-Men movie, “The Last Stand”. And I have to say, I have mixed feelings about it.

Spoilers Behind the Cut, in case you haven’t seen it yet. )

Hmm... Well I have to agree on Nightcrawler's total absence and Jean Grey's zombie walk through most of the film. Big letdowns.

Cyclop's "?!?!" also was something of a dissapointment. (Was he killed? Did he vanish? Did the Phoenix absorb him?) A lot more of him would have been more practical- I mean they pay him to be in the movie and he's in two scenes? Come on! The movies had actually made what I once considered a boring goodey-two shoes into someone worth watching for more than just the eyebeams. He might as well have joined nightcrawler on the "no show" list. A shame.

To me, Juggernaut was a throw away, and a complete was of time, effort and script space. I always found him dull, but the movie made him a paperweight. Still, I couldn't care less...

The final showdown. Okay, no big surprise that Wolverine makes the entire thing work. Jackman is easily the strongest thread connecting this to the previous entries and unarguably, he's 'the best at what he does' (I used to hate that phrase in the comics). The scene where he takes wave after wave of punishment from the Phoenix and keeps moving forward is well-done... though the conclusion is a tad bit trite in my opinion.

I had mixed feelings about the whole "mutant cure" thing. It seems like it was just an excuse to give Rogue an easy out so she and her snow-boy could had some luvin'. Ewwwww! Happy endings are okay, but not just so everything can be wrapped up quickly and in a neat package.

I actually had no problem with Magneto's prickishness, and it's not because he's "the bad guy". I too like both the character as well as Mckellen's repeatedly stellar performances in the role. While it is easy to write it of as making him even meaner by seeming shallow, I beleive it may have been to underscore what Magneto believes in. Technically, the fact he let Mystique live after she essentially became a normal human was a show of kindness... anyone less, he probably would've killed them. Maybe I'm wrong on that, but that's how I saw it.

All in all,

The Good: Wolverine, Colossus & Prof. X's death scene.

The Bad: No Nightcrawler, the lame mutant army (what's with old porcupine face?)

The Ugly: Kelsey Grammar as Harry Monster from Sesame Street... eh, I mean as Beast.
