So I have a new MC gig and it’s ACES!
It’s at the Steyne Hotel in Manly, for a night called The S Factor (dicky name) but it’s a new talent showcase for musicians.
Upstairs and up the ramp to Stage 1 Bar (really nice bar) from 8pm every Wednesday night.
And it’s not an ‘open mic’ type night = lots of bad random talent, there’s a screening process so these acts were really good!
It’s a great way for me to get comfortable talking to an audience and as it’s not a comedy gig there’s no gags or comedy factor which means less nerves for me!
The resident violinist is this guy:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=YPwNJsi6n38 His name is ‘Retaw’ which is water backwards as his parent were hippies. Man you should see him play - he gets up with bands if they want him to and just totally improvises and makes them sound even awesomer. There’s a resident percussionist too, so even if you’re just an act with vocals and guitar you can have percussion and violin improvised while you play to fill out the sound.
The STAND OUT of the night was oh my god - this guy called “Naoki Jo” from Japan. He’s in Sydney for two months just playing around the place. He plays the most incredible guitar I have ever seen, in so much that he gets about five different sounds, including percussion, out of his guitar at the same time, here’s a bit of footage of him busking in Pitt Street but really doesn’t do him justice:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwSMTtl8DLU&search=Naoki He got up and did his set and on a pretty packed night the audience went wild. For the start everyone just stood there with there mouths open then we all went crazy I’ve never seen anything like it. People were holding their phones up to tape him (cos it’s a real visual act) and calling their friends to say listen to this! Plus with his broken “Engrish” and his mannerisms he was just the cutest little guy, the smile on his face as he plays is priceless. I convinced him to give us an encore and he promised to come back and play in two weeks time on Wednesday 19th so looking forward to that.
As I tagged it - “Naoki Jo, with the only guitar technique I’ve ever seen that requires a farking run up!”
