Poetry Jam: Wendy Cope

Feb 20, 2020 12:13

My vacation snuck up on me, so this is super late, sorry. You can find lunabee34's post here.

This month we're reading Elizabeth Bishop's Geography III. Our shedule for the year can be found here

This was a mixed bag for me. Some poems I found quite charming, but others felt expected and somewhat slight.

My favorite phrase:
Christmas was a muddle
Of turkey bones and muted quarreling
(from "30th December")

My favorite poems:
The Squirrel and the Crow
Dead Sheep Poem
He Tells Her

My least favorite poems:
A Hampshire Disaster
Being Boring*

*I even agree with the sentiment, but while having a poem about being boring actually be boring may be thematically fitting, it is also not a good idea.

What I keep thinking about:

The Teacher's Tale

I love poems with a longer narrative. This felt so very plausible in it's understated way and I really felt for Paul. It seems fitting that he becomes a teacher in the end.

What did you think?
