lukifer77 asked: How are you doing?
I'm doing alright...teaching is a lot of work. I never realized that every paper and assignment that our teacher's told us to do had to EVENTUALLY be graded. I've been pretty good about the grading, but this weekend has been nothing but devoted to grading last minute assignments.
mayhemwench asked: Do you have any tips for first-time teachers?
I would say focus on classroom management and keep your lessons simple. You need to keep charge of your classroom - I've been doing a pretty good job at this, but I know I will get better at management in the upcoming years. You will also have students that are learning on different levels in your classroom, and keeping the assignments simple will make it easier to explain.
Good luck with your teaching program, Kyla. When can you start teaching? I would suggest substitute teaching first - It really helps your classroom management skills.
freklfacedjrae asked: How did the kids like their notebooks with the upside down instructions?
For those who don't know, I bought notebooks for my students for writing about their independent reading books. Mike, Jess, Pooka, and Matt helped me put them together. Mike and Jess thought putting the instructions inside the book upside down was HILARIOUS.
Luckily the students who had the pranked notebooks thought the joke was funny too.
processpiece asked: 1. How are the kids? 2. What's your room like? 3. What are you teaching them? Any cool projects?
1. My kids are fun - They always want to hang out with me during lunch and ask me A MILLION questions about my life. They can be real smart asses sometimes, but I'm straightening them out day by day.
2. My room took some time to get together, but all the APs and other English teachers say I have the best room - It has lots of instructional posters, student projects, and festive stuff all over.
3. I just finished our Nonfiction Children's Book unit, and now have a HUGE stack of books to grade. On Monday, I'm starting our Gary Soto Author Study - He's a Chicano writer who writes about his life in Fresno, California. I would suggest his writing to everyone - His prose are incredible.
If anyone else has any questions about my adventures in teaching, I'll be more than happy to keep on posting them.
