hey, I got here from your tumblr (I'm neorxnawang there), mind if I friend you? I don't post a lot on my LJ, but I'm on there a lot and read all my friends entries and participate in communities.
Nice to meet you! I don't mind at all, add away :) I read your profile and you're currently studying linguistics at the University of Zürich? What a perfect life!
XD you made my day with this comment. That's really a reaction I've never had to the fact that I'm studying linguistics... (especially if I tell them I study historical linguistics of the germanic languages the reaction is more "what?" than "awesome") but yes, I do sometimes think I should enjoy every moment of it because it might be the only time in my life I'm really doing something I chose freely and enjoy and Zürich is a really pretty spot too. Last semester I walked every wednesday from the English department in an old house with a big garden through small alleyways of Zürich's old town to the central library for a course on medieval manuscripts and every time I thought it's actually a nice city to study in. (We won't talk about the university though, but then those are a mess in most places, I guess)
I love languages! Being able to converse with people from other race is amazing, where I'm from we have to study English, Chinese and Malay, I wish they'd teach Hindi as well. Right now I'm learning Japanese and German(no grammar books yet, just memorising words and pronounciation from the dictionary) at home. Zürich is probably the perfect place to study, the architecture looks so majestic and makes one focus on scholarly thoughts :)
We have to learn English and French in schools, some friends of mine have been studying some Hindi and I know some people studying sinology as well, but I don't think I know anybody who knows Malay
( ... )
I understand, it really is very fascinating to learn about how languages evolved through time, their origins and nuances, does that mean you can read Anglo-Saxon text?? *o* I've only been to areas around Bahnhofstrasse during a weekend, and we freaked out because it was so empty! It's quite shocking to know that shops close around evenings and Thursday is the general relaxation day and shops open later that day! In our region shops usually open till 10pm and the crowd is the worst during Saturdays and Sundays. We laughed at this clothing store called "GROSS" as well... Yes I have msn, what's your email account there? I'll add you, it seems that we have a lot to talk about :)
Well, with a glossary or wordbook, yes :) we don't have to learn any vocabulary, or learn paradigms by heart, but we learn how the grammar works and how things developed (we have to learn the sound changes by heart) and in the end reading a text should be possible. Haha, yes, it's shocking how empty cities are on sundays. But saturday, accordingly, is the worst. Never try to go shopping on saturday afternoon in Zürich, should you ever come here again. We're still lucky though, in Zürich, since the shops in the main station and at the airport are open until late and on sundays as well.
The other thing that's great about your country is that pets are allowed in public areas like shopping malls etc, simply wonderful! I like how a country tries it's best to coexist with nature and have the mind to protect and preserve it.
hm, we might be trying, but then we're one of the densest populated countries in Europe, especially considering the parts of Switzerland that are simply rocks, where no one can live. This of course leads to a on going conflict between the space humans want/need and the space nature asks for. For example we've been having bears and wolves crossing the borders to Switzerland, which is probably a compliment to our forests, mountains and national parks. Unfortunately one of the bears was shot after he started to lose every respect of human settlements and getting his food from there instead of hunting and right now there's a discussion going on on whether to shoot a wolf that has been killing cows and sheep (many argue that farmers should use dogs etc to take more care of their cattle instead of asking for the wolf to be shot, but probably they'll shoot him anyway
( ... )
Achh speaking of bears, it was so saddening to hear that the bear in the Bern zoo was shot because a person climbed in and provoked it to attack a human :(
oh, don't worry, he was only shot at, not killed and managed to recover surprisingly fast :) also there's tons of videos on youtube of the baby bears and their parents: http://www.youtube.com/user/BaerenparkBern
many people were very worried about him, probably more then about the guy who climbed in, even though it wasn't really the guys fault either (he was mentally handicapped, his bag had fallen in and he didn't realise that climbing in was the worst way to get the bag back)
