More Hugo stuff

1. So this year's Hugo Awards were announced. At the bottom of that page, there's a link to a pdf of the voting stats, which I was looking forward to, to see whether my vote made a difference, all by its onesie.

And it did! In the Best Novel category, Leviathan Wakes - which I voted for - made the nomination with 71 votes; The Quantum Thief - which I did not vote for, and did not read because I tried to wade through the first chapter, and found that I did not give enough of a shit about the characters to invest the effort in sorting out the not-immediately-obvious magic science system so I AM NOT SORRY - had 70 votes. Without me, they would have tied, and there would have been six novels on the ballot.

Soooo, it's not quite the dramatically exciting If I hadn't voted, my pick wouldn't have made the ballot!, because it would have been a tie. But! If me and one other Leviathan Wakes voter hadn't voted, our pick wouldn't have made the ballot. FIST BUMP, YO.

2. I have read N. K. Jemisin's The Shadowed Sun, which is the second in the duology with The Killing Moon, set in an Egypt-y world where the magic is based in dreams. It was also awesome; the duology will be one of my nominees next year.

3. Did I tell you guys about The Witch of Duva yet? Probably not, I never tell you guys anything. It's a short story, a Hansel-and-Gretel-y fairy tale. I can't tell you the things I love best about it, because they're spoilers.

It's set in the same world as a novel that came out this year (Shadow and Bone), which I also read and enjoyed, but I wasn't over the moon about it like I still am for this story.

I plan to get around to browsing All The Short Stories on the webzines earlier this year than I did last year. But I guess it's already September, so... well, it's not early. But it's earlier.
