Yep. Still feeling editing anxieties. Now though, they have manifested themselves in a deep and horrifying panic about characters and getting back to the place I will need to get to if I'm going to be spending time with them and tinkering with them to make them better. This is not a new fear for me, especially for this particular story

The fanfic-ing is a brilliant idea. You can just conjure them again and get them talking randomly to each other. I find my characters start conversations in my head when I'm doing dreary things like driving, vacuuming, queueing etc when I'm really into something I'm writing (hasn't happened in a while). Thay talk about what I can see. Or you could do drama characterisation exercises with them like hot-spotting until they've fully returned.
I'm slightly concerned, though, that if you keep putting off reading through (which you'll have to do eventually) then you're going to build it up into this worrying thing which is too scary to attempt and which gets more scary the longer you put it off. I completely understand the fear, but for me often the best way to confront these things is just to run full tilt at them and get them over with before the anxiety gets to embed itself. Give yourself a time limit so you read it quickly and don't stop to pick at bits.
So my less than helpful advice is to do all of the above plus the read-through you're avoiding!

Ha, this gave me a brilliant idea actually. On my Kindle touch it is possible to send myself a PDF and it's also possible to have either a creepy male or female highly digitized voice (I'm sure they're working out kinks and the voices will get better, now, they're just strange) read to you. So I think I'll do that. For funsies! And so I can see how bad it might be (or good, I'll concede that it might not ALL suck) but not take it too seriously.
If it's a really hilarious experiment maybe I'll do a voice post. :))
