Yay Bush! Protecting doctors who still have beliefs...

Dec 20, 2008 17:03

Imagine veterinarians required by their profession to participate in meatpacking... of dogs.

In a way, it's an inadequate comparison, but just what came to mind when contemplating doctors being forced to choose between doing abortions and being fired or else-wise losing professional standing.

I sometimes can't believe that trying to be understanding of people with different beliefs requires me to consider that there are people - relatively intelligent people - who equate beliefs opposing abortion to vegan beliefs or heartfelt convictions about carbon emissions.
After all, Jennifer (I tell myself), fetuses are merely being harvested for research purposes. If the abortion industry is limited, humanity will be deprived of important potential medical discoveries that haven't surfaced yet despite the decades of work that has already gone on. All of this is quite reasonable, after all.

What is mind-blowingly perverse is the idea that doctors and nurses, pharmacists, and entire hospital systems are victimized regularly by "patient advocates" who contend that patients' "rights" trump the personal religious beliefs of health care professionals - who, last time I checked - are still covered under the First Amendment.

Doctors practicing in situations funded by tax dollars should not be required to check their consciences at the door. It's the same old situation faced by students, teachers, and government workers. I'm sorry, guys, if you don't agree with the very vocal activists who worship their religion of pop-political humanism, you aren't covered by the Bill of Rights.

You're merely an arm of the government, and the left arm has a death-grip on the right.
