Key West post-hurricane By the numbers

Oct 25, 2005 14:02

From Monte Tolar...
- 60% of All homes flooded at some point
- 50 people currently at high school with no home
- 30% of KW city assets destroyed, sounds like mostly vehicles that
were in parking garage. 50% of all city workers flooded and/or
affected
- 1,000 cars damaged/destroyed
- most/all of sunset pier destroyed. This is the Hilton pier, not
Mallory Square
- airport to open Friday at earliest
- cell towers being powered by battery backup or generator if
available AlbionDFin: - National Guard arriving today
- city hall to open tomorrow with skeleton crew
- port to hopefully open saturday
- as of this moment, FFest is not cancelled
- Gov Bush to meet with Mayor at 1:30 today.
- the bridge that connected sunset pier to Mallory square is in the
street closer to Mel Fishers museum.
I went on the US1 radio this morning, offered parrothead support and
plugged MOTM, reminding them there are 3,500 - 5,000 parrotheads
ready to come down and spend money in 2 weeks!

On a side note...
If we do all make it down to the Keys, most of the residents you'll
be seeing down here work for tips. Parrot Heads in general already
have a reputation as bad tippers with the bartenders wait staff and
hotel workers. Please keep in mind how much they have lost and tip
big.
