“What are you doing out here?”
Cameron looked up from her seat on the garage floor. John was giving her that look that meant she was doing something odd. Cameron looked away. “I am waiting.”
“For what?”
“For Charlie Dixon to return to his home,” Cameron said clearly. She returned to the task at hand, cleaning and oiling her impressive cache of weapons. John stayed quiet but he remained at the door and continued to watch Cameron with what Cameron analyzed and labeled as a pensive expression.
Charley Dixon had not left in nearly three days. Cameron counted: two days, twelve hours, forty-six minutes and eighteen seconds. Charley's presence was disruptive in a way Cameron could not qualify. Cameron looked away and took a few moments to review her memory bank. She accessed the video file that corresponded to the surveillance she conducted on the perimeter of the house at an estimated twenty-six hours, thirteen minutes and four seconds ago. Cameron saw the backyard where Charley and Sarah had spoke in low voices and had later embraced.
Cameron has replayed this clip eighty-seven times.
John made a snorting sound at the back of his throat that Cameron guessed was supposed to be a laugh.
“You're jealous,” John said. Cameron's hands stilled on the semi-automatic she was reassembling.
She said nothing.
