Today I spent the day with J's family remembering his abuelita, who passed away in Guatemala last Thursday at the age of 101. His mother V showed us the video her family took of the funeral procession to the graveyard and laying her to rest in the colorfully painted tomb. From all the people who attended, she was well known and well loved in her community. We then went to the Novato cemetery and met up with his two brothers, cousin, and V's sister at her son's graveside, where we held our own memorial with photos, family stories, and food (including some amazing strawberry flan and ham and brie bagettes). I wish I could have met her, but in a way I suppose I have. J's family are all so kind and welcoming, really good people who care about each other and aren't above saying "I love you" to anyone in their circle. From what I understand, that was the defining feature of their abuelita.
