My college courses are over. I aced all four semesters. And now it's time to find a job.
There are various options for where an appliance repairperson could work. Sears, furniture stores like The Brick, appliance companies, repair shops, or going into business for oneself.
The nearest Sears service centre is 90 minutes away. The Brick and Leon's have strength requirements that I don't meet. The appliance companies like Whirlpool no longer have their own techs, they farm it out to independent contractors. I don't have the experience to be an independent yet.
So I made a list of the 37 closest repair shops. ("Close" means they require 70 minutes or less to get to, one way.) I've visited 14 so far. 4 were out of business, 10 weren't hiring. I'll hit more tomorrow, and more Monday, until my list is exhausted.
I'll admit I'm dubious. These shops run from 9 AM or 10 AM. If they open at 10 and I need an hour to get there, I'll need to get up at 8:30 AM. With my sleep disorder, how long will I be able to sustain getting up that early?
Maybe all the shops will say no. If that's the case, I move on to cold-calling independent contractors and hoping for an apprenticeship.
